Welcome ED New Jays + Another 'From a Hopkins Freshman' Post

Hello everyone!!

First of all, I want to say congrats to all of the new jays that have been admitted early decision. Not to speak on behalf of the entire freshman class, but I think all of us are excited to show you around and become mentors of sorts to yall, as previous classes have done for us. If you have questions about Hopkins, as always, feel free to comment and I will try my best to answer them.

I think my last post was after fall midterms, so it seems like the right time to update again. We’re a few weeks into spring semester and I think it’s already going better for me than fall semester. While I passed all of my classes in the fall and managed to get a job, I had a really difficult time mentally and spent the entirety of the semester trying new ADHD meds until my psychiatrist and I found one that worked. Now that my meds suit my needs I can definitely focus better, and I was granted SDS accommodations at the end of fall semester due to my ADHD and anxiety. I’m still working out how to juggle everything, as I ended up deciding to take 17.5 credits this semester and challenge myself again. My time management is questionable at times, but I think I’m already doing better; I’ve got over a 90% average on my homework assignments in all of my classes, which is a huge improvement for me. In addition, I actually have the motivation to push myself again.

The biggest difference this semester, as you might’ve guessed, is that we’re hybrid now! I lived in Baltimore in the fall, but now I have an established friend group here with me and it is so nice to know they’re there. I haven’t been to the library or anything yet b/c I’m nervous, but I hope to soon. I’ve gotten pretty used to our 3x a week testing now, I can pretty consistently complete them in 30 seconds and I’m a bit proud of myself for that. As for in-person classes, I haven’t had any yet. Campus closed due to snow one week, and due to an outbreak another week, so I haven’t gotten to go to physics lab in person yet, but hopefully I will on Monday.

Major-wise, I’m fairly set on Physics for now, with either a double major or a minor in Computer Science. Our physics program is very tight-knit, so I feel lucky to have so many friends in my major and in my classes.

Any crises yet? Only one; my laptop broke on Wednesday night so I had to reset it and lose my apps – I’m hoping I can restore my Ubuntu files, or else I’ll have to redo everything for my research internship and my intermediate programming class. Besides that, I’m doing well and I’m much happier than I had been in the fall. Also, I have a cat now.
