anyone have input about the stuff that goes on?

what's caltopia like?
how's calapalooza?
are the college orientations mandatory (CoE here)?
Also I have "Department of Bioengineering Advising Workshop"

will I have a chance to talk to an adviser about switching majors or doubling?

Caltopia was fun, lots of freebies and promotions from local businesses. Very long lines in the afternoon though... so it's good to go early. Last year Starbucks handed out $10 gift cards for the early-birds.

I see that Caltopia is a two-day event but the first day is on the move-in day for most people so is there a disadvantage to going only to the second day? Are there different "events" for each day ? .. thanks!

For Caltopia, it's better to go on the first day when it begins. All the best free stuff will be out by the second day. Too bad for you new freshman that they decided to shorten Welcome Week.

Calapalozza is basically the Chancellor giving a nice speech and then a buffet-style dinner for free on Memorial Glade.

Calapalooza is not JUST the chancellor and some food. It's also where all the student organizations table and showcase their clubs to all the freshmen. It's a great opportunity to check out all the different groups and see what they're all about.

Though according to the site, due to budget cuts, they've decreased the size and scope of the event. Hopefully it hasn't changed too much from past semesters...

Okay..since classes start on Wednesday... one of my classes conflicts with the Chancellor's reception, and the other conflicts with most of Calapalooza on Thursday...

What the hell?!?!?! This is so not fair. I mean, what, my welcome week activities are sacrificed because of conflicting classes?

Yea I'm sorry... It really sucks that they cut down welcome week this semester. You guys move in and already have to attend class in a couple days. And don't even get to fully enjoy welcome week activities...

I have the same situation with the chancellor's reception too :/ BUT.. it turns out that you're allowed to go to one of the other receptions if you can't make it to the one designated for your housing option.
