Welcome New College Rep, BMC_Official Rep from Bryn Mawr College

Please join me in welcoming our newest College Rep, BMC_Official Rep from Bryn Mawr College!

(As a reminder, we have taken reasonable steps to verify that our College Rep members are indeed who they claim to be. If you encounter anyone in the community who claims to be from a college’s admissions office but isn’t designated as a College Rep, please let us know and be wary of any advice provided before that person is so designated.)

Stop in and say hello in this thread, but please do NOT use this thread to ask questions - start a new thread with an appropriate title. In addition, since our College Reps are busy people, please do NOT start threads asking for help specifically from the Rep - please post the query to the community in general, and you’ll be likely to get multiple informed views on the subject. If the College Rep can provide useful input, no doubt he/she will chime in.

Welcome! I'm almost positive I'm applying to Bryn Mawr, so it'll be great to have you around :-) Thanks.

Welcome, BMC_Official Rep!

I'm a former Smith admission counselor, so it's great to see another "Sister" on CC.

This is great. My daughter asked me to print out the Bryn Mawr Classics Department website info for her and to register her for the seminar days coming up. Perhaps it's an omen?
Seriously, welcome!

Hi Rep! I am a rising first year! Welcome to CC.

PS: If any potential '13ers have questions, please feel free to PM me.
PPS: Sally, I didn't know you were a sister (never did the research), cheers!

Congrats on a fine college choice, froghorn.

I never considered Bryn Mawr because I grew up in the Philly 'burbs and wanted to go away to college, but I have a number of friends who are BMC alums and really valued their experience there.

Thanks, I am very excited about it! I really like the area but can definitely understand the desire to move on; I live in the town adjacent to Wellesley which was one of the over-powering factors in my decision to decline admission. I continue to be impressed by BMC and other Sister grads; I wish more people looked at the Sisters.

Welcome to the CC community. Its alwas good to see more admissions reps join. Gives validation to what I've been saying about collegeconfidential: Its the best free information about colleges anywhere.

Welcome to CC! My friends at Bryn Mawr College speak highly of it, and they're not easily pleased haha.

Another rising first year here! It's great to see someone from BMC- Welcome to CC!

(Less than fifty days, Froghorn!)

Welcome Welcome!!
I'm another excited upcoming freshwoman!
It's exciting to have someone official speaking!

By the way, Sally, I was accepted to Smith as well this year and thought it was fabulous! I have several friends going there! It came down to the reputation of my intended major program and proximity to big city/ home (I'm from the D.C. area). Nevertheless, you chose a great school to work for!

Thanks, emma problema. I'll pass along your kind words about Smith to my old pals in the admission office. I'm sure they're sorry that they didn't snag you, but at least they will take some comfort in the fact that you'll be at another Sister School. :) (They'll also want to know which program at Bryn Mawr you thought was a better fit for you ... are you telling?)

Best wishes for a great BMC experience.

Hi, I plan to transfer to BMC for 09fall! I'm so glad to know someone from BMC! Hope we can have more threads about BMC to make incoming applicants acquaint with BMC!

Sally_Rubenstone, my D received a book award from Smith. As a former Smith admission counselor, do you still think Smith is one of the top LACs? Thanks.

sd_dolphins--Since I live across the street from Smith and walk or jog on the campus almost daily, I often can't resist the urge to grill the students I encounter about their Smith experiences (and all of my "victims" have been polite enough to endure these interrogations :) ). I have been very impressed with the very positive responses I've gotten. Students tell me that their classes are small, as advertised, and that they really get to know their professors.

Some are not thrilled with the social-life options at a single-sex school, but most don't consider this limitation to be a deal-breaker. (Some, of course, do and they transfer.) Two students I know of who spent junior terms abroad (one in London and one at Wesleyan on an exchange program) both effused about their wonderful time away but also expressed eagerness to get back to Smith.

Smith students also seem to do well when it comes to job and grad-school placements.

So, yes, I would definitely call Smith one of the top LAC's.

Welcome Bryn Mawr Rep. Hi Sally.

I regret that my D did not apply to Bryn Mawr -- she was stubborn. However, she chose Barnard and is now a senior, so things worked out.

I love Smith, too.

I often have a hard time getting my advisees to consider a women's college. My standard line is to tell them that, if they were teleported to campus and woke up at Smith (or Bryn Mawr, Barnard, etc.), they'd be very satisfied.

But it can be a battle to get them to apply in the first place. (Apparently, my little "teleporting" speech rarely has much impact :( )

Well, she did apply to Barnard and Smith. For some reason, she dug in her heels at Bryn Mawr. But since she is a NYC girl, the result would have been the same.

However, I am glad to now give Bryn Mawr it's due. I have sort of fallen in love with it.

My thoughts about the all-girl aspect of campus sort of went like this:

Wow, this school is basically everything I want, and it seems like it would be an amazing fit. But it's all girls. GAH.

And then I spent several weeks deciding if I really wanted to apply or not, but I finally decided that everything else about Bryn Mawr was too good to pass up, and that I could just deal with the lack of guys by going to Hav, Swat, or Philly. I've had years of co-ed schooling, might as well try it a different way.

I'm with you, brillar. So many of the women's colleges are close to other awesome schools (Bryn Mawr and the Tri-Co, Smith and MHC with the 5 College Cons., Wellesley and all the close-to-Boston schools) that I think it'll all balance out.

Besides, I'm in this whole business to get a solid and stimulating education, and that certainly seems possible at both coed and women's colleges. :-)

Getting back to Bryn Mawr, yes indeed it is awesome! I just visited and had an interview a few days ago and it was great...met some really strikingly articulate and friendly people there. Good times!
