Welcome, Alexandre!!!!

P.S. just out of curiousity, how does one become a moderator?

Welcomeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!:)

Welcome fellow Cornellian :)

Alexandre is all-knowing. I was obsessed with UMich for a while (it was my second choice after Cornell) and he helped me a lot in my college choice. Congratulations on your new status as a moderator Alexandre!

alexandre, i dont get it.. you went to umich or cornell or both?? and what the heck are u doing in dubai??

Go48, I did my undergrad at Michigan (AB Economics, '96) and my graduate studies at Cornell (MILR, '01).

And since I am an Arab, I thought moving back to the Middle East would be best for me. So I accepted an offer in Dubai 10 months ago.

I hope this answers your questions.

Alexandre,

How would you compare Cornell & Michigan in terms of academics, social life, and general calibre of student body. Is there a different feel to the two campuses.

Wharf

Here is a brief comparison.

ACADEMICS: Overall, both universities have top 10 academics. They are amazing in every field of study. I would say that for students interested in the hard sciences, Cornell has a clear edge. Michigan has a clear advantage in the social sciences. But both are awesome academically.

SOCIAL LIFE: Both campuses are very lively and spirited. The students at Cornell are very inviting and fun. Michigan students are also quite fun. However, I would give Ann Arbor a clear edge over Ithaca. When deciding on an undergraduate university, I disqualified Cornell because of its location. Michigan's school spirit is hard to match, so Michigan has the advantage there. However, for people who love the outdoors and a more rural setting, you cannot beat Ithaca, so it really depends on what one likes.

CAMPUS: Cornell's campus is stunning and gorgeous. Michigan's campus is impressive. Cornell wins in terms of landscape and beauty, Michigan's is probably slightly more impressive. Overall, I give the edge to Cornell.

CALIBRE OF STUDENT BODY: Cornell and Michigan both have highly gifted and ambitious students. I would give a slight edge to Cornell in this criterion, but only just. With the exception of CalTech, Harvard, MIT, Princeton, Stanford and Yale, I cannot think of any student body that is significantly better than Michigan's...or Cornell's for that matter.

Overall, I think both schools are equally awesome...and somewhat underrated. But at least we know the truth! hehe

Alexandre,

Thanks for the great comparrison.

Wharf

Whatever alexandre,

Michigan's student body doesnt compare to any of the Ivies. As I have mentioned, even from classes that graduated last year the UM accepts were no where near any of the Ivies.

BTW - Alexandre continually tries to set apart HYPSM students and then consider the rest of the Ivies and the students at Michigan in the same category when they simply are not. The differences between HYPSM students and the rest of the Ivies in terms of stats are about a 40pt higher average on the SAT and about 5% more in the top 10% of their class. The gap between the other Ivies and Michigan is much greater than this, AND Michigan (like almost all state schools) isnts EC/ or personal attention focused at all in admissions! There is a huge distinction. You cant lump these schools in the same bag.

slippery, we are supposed to be welcoming this guy.

Alexandre is a cool dude, he's helped me out a lot. Welcome.

i agree with Texas...sheesh, just be thankful we have someone with a lot of wisdom around.
