What in the world is the UCLA difference?

ya i would like to know about this as well. Some of my friends got the invitation for the AAP scholars day, and some didnt.

AAP stands for?

Academic Advancement Program.....Its for low income or First generation college students....i went last year and it was really informative and you get the opportunity to take part in the Freshman Summer Program where you can take classes over the summer @ UCLA before school starts and it will count towards your GE requirements :)....i didnt do this but alot of my friends that did really loved the experience. You also get to take either a tour of campus or the dorms so you also get to have a deeper look at the campus
so ya hope that helps :)

so what is college welcome day then?

same question

i get the impression college welcome day is more social and informal while the aap scholars day is formal dressed and such?

How do you know if you got an invite to AAP Scholar's Day? E-mail/Letter/Online Acceptance Website?

Ok whuts the Dif between...

Welcome Day
Scholar's Day
and this AAP Scholar's Day?

I'm really confused.

AAP scholars day is definitely not formal...i went in jeans and shirt!!! i didnt go to college welcome day so i wouldnt know how to compare the two.......AAP just introduces you to UCLA (just as i think college welcome day does) and introduces you to the opportunities that the AAP program has to offer.

What is the AAP program, and why did some people get invites to that and others were just informed of WELCOME TO COLLEGE day?

Academic Advancement Program.

That's really weird. I have a 4.2, 2000 SAT, first generation, very low income, only living in US for 7 years, and did not get an invite.
A friend of mine with a 1750 SAT, 3.7 GPA, not first gen, and middle class got invited. What's the catch?

hmm thats wierd....you should've been invited....anyways here's a link with more info about the program

1750 SAT and got into UCLA? man. i think we're accepting worse and worse. no offense to your friend and all.

Ok, so then what's Honors Day as opposed to AAP Scholar's Day?

"1750 SAT and got into UCLA? man. i think we're accepting worse and worse. no offense to your friend and all."

You hear someone's GPA and SAT score and you're giving them a value already? How can you say, "no offense to your friend" when you clearly criticized them?

No offense taken (by my friend...lol). She's been working for years now, supporting all her own expenses (car, phone, insurance), and is Chief Editor of the Yearbook, along with vball player, club vball player, and her essays were great. She deserved to get in.

AAP gets a list from the registrar that tells us who is apart of our target population. The registrar saw something on someones application that made them feel they would need our services. Everyone is eligible to apply to AAP regardless of whether they are low income, or have certain circumstances, but if you do not attend the Freshman or Transfer summer program, you would have to apply for the program directly. Scholars day is where we give that information about our summer programs, eligibility and what we offer to students in general throughout the year.

We used to offer a Freshman scholars day that was separate from Welcome day but due to the budget we integrated the Freshman Scholars day into workshop presentations for “Welcome Day” aka Bruin Day. We have a separate Transfer Scholars day in May for transfer students.

“Welcome day” offers workshops and information regarding different organizations on campus and campus services as a whole. Transfer scholars day only gives information about our Academic Advance Program (AAP) and the summer program.

I suggest calling the New Student Programs office for any questions or concerns. (310) 206-1571

Also, in relation to admission

Its not just about GPA or SAT scores that states whether you are worthy for admission to UCLA. Admissions looks for well rounded students who participated in community service activities and who were active in their schools and communities.

What you will learn once you enter the University setting is that GPA doesn’t measure intelligence. The academic climate in college is completely different from Middle or High school.

The Academic Advancement Program recognizes that not all students come from the same background and attempts to bridge the gaps by creating resources necessary for student success. If you need help, AAP is there to do what they can to make sure you succeed.

People shouldn’t look at “why I wasn’t automatically accepted into” AAP as a negative towards the program itself, because everyone is allowed to apply for the program. Students should take this as an example of the way governmental institutions categorize people and use descriptive factors to segregate them. As a federally funded program, the AAP program is required to adhere to certain criteria and standards enforced by the federal government and UCLA.
