Welcome to Harvard! (and useful hints) - from Harvard 2011 student

^^ LOL
Until I read the second sentence, I actually thought that was a real holiday.
I'll be glad to participate in that once the end of the year rolls around :)

As a NYer I already know how cold it gets and I still wear nothing but shorts in January =D

Thanks so much for your response to my questions =)
I was wondering if you had any information regarding the Environmental Studies and Public Policy Concentration. There is a requirement of 16 half-courses, where most concentrations seem to only require 10. Is this concentration more intense than most?

Thanks once again =)

Is there a place to buy food, as well? Like to keep in our refrigerators?

Also, what do you do when you get sick? Where do you go for help/medicine/a doctor?

And if you get placed into different levels of a class based on placement tests vs. AP scores, which level do you actually go into?

Thanks!

If you end up living a suite, is it wiser to buy a single fridge for each room, or one for the entire suite?

I think that the Environmental Studies and Public Policy Concentration is a combined concentration and, as such, includes more requirements than most. 16 half-courses is fairly intense, and you will have to meticulously plan out your college career. However, if you just make sure that you get all your requirements, it should be fine. I still argue that physics/math are the most intense majors for the difficulty of their classes.

Yes, you can go to Broadway Market to buy groceries (I think that another one just opened up closer to the dorms recently). However, most of the grocery stores around here are pretty expensive. I recommend loving dorm food/making trips to upperclassmen dining halls. If you insist, however, you can buy groceries from Boston/Porter Square. You just have to get on the T (subway). It's not that bad. CVS provides many non-perishable (and select perishable) foods. There are also a variety of okay to good restaurants around here. However, the best restaurants are in Boston.

Definitely get a single fridge for the suite. Too many fridges takes up too much room. I recommend getting a larger one. If you want a new fridge, HSA Dorm Store supplies them HSA Dorm Store - Futons, Refridgerators, Rugs, and Water Coolers Delivered . If you would not mind a used one, I'd get one from the Habitat for Humanity used items sale at the start of the year.

Do we have to take a seminar for each semester? The ones I'm interested in are rall in the spring...

piccolojunior,

I found this on the FAS Freshman seminar website, thought it would answer your question...

How many Freshman Seminars may I enroll in?
A student may apply to as many Freshman Seminars as desired and rank them according to 1st choice, 2nd choice, etc. Ultimately, a student may enroll in only one seminar in a term, though it is possible to take one in each term of the first year if space is available.

....so I guess that means students can choose to take one in the fall or spring, during both semesters, or not at all.

To expand on the question, however...is their only one preference list, or are we able to list our preferences for each semester? I was reading that students often are accepted only to their first choice, as the professor wants only those that are extremely interested in his/her subject.

want2bIvy,

While you can take a seminar both semesters if you like, I would recommend that you only take one semester. This is because, although Freshman Seminars are quite interesting, it is a good idea to get a start on fulfilling your other requirements, such as concentration requirements and especially the General Education (previously, the CORE) requirements. However, if you fill out a preference list for the first semester and do not get the seminar you would like, you can always decline and try again in your second semester!

How many people get assigned writing Expos 20 the first semester? Also, if we were assigned it second semester, and took three other real classes, how likely would it be that Harvard would allow us to take a Freshman Seminar as well for a total of 5 classes?

After first semester, you can take up to six classes per semester (and more if you petition). This year was the first year I didn't take five since second semester freshman year, and I found it quite manageable. If one of them is a P/F seminar, it's actually pretty easy.

How does P/F factor into GPA, if at all?

I have a few more questions for whoever can answer them......

How was meals managed? Do we have a set number of times that we can scan through in a semester? How late is food served?

Are libraries open 24/7 or 24/5?

Is there a convenient place to workout near the freshman dorms?

What are the average parties like? Are they drunken high school events or more sophisticated gatherings with people talking and drinking?

Thanks for you time!

I do know the answer to number 1 is a 99 meals/week plan. Apparently the record for one week is 57, so no one ever comes close to worrying about food. I stayed at Adams during pre-frosh weekend and the dining hall is only closed for 2 hours between meals...but IDK about the 8 pm - 7 am time, during which it was closed AFAIK

What is the avg number of classes Harvard students take per semester? Around 4 or 5?

To Whiterabbit:

Some libraries (Lamont) are open 24/7 during most busy times of the year

You will have to walk a bit to the gym. The Mack is quite nice, and it is just down Dunster street.

Parties range from drunken bacchanals to tamer cocktail parties. It depends on which party you are looking at, so I cannot say for sure. Most parties during the year are more like dance parties with some drinks.

To Piccolojunior:

I think that if you pass, a P/F class doesn't change your GPA, but if you fail, it lowers it. (But it's pretty difficult to fail)

To Laststopforme:

The average courseload is 4 classes/semester, although 5 is pretty common as well. However, 4 classes is the minimum.

False, 3 classes is the minimum (and some premeds will drop down to 3 classes the semester that they take the MCAT). You need to graduate with 32 classes, and you don't need special petitions for anywhere from between 3-6 classes per semester. How you allocate it is your business.

P/F does not factor into your GPA at all, if you fail you don't get credit for the class, if you pass you do. GPA is unaffected (although if you fail a class you have to go to the Ad Board).

Just to round out the library response, Lamont is the only 24 hour library on undergrad campus, and it is 24/5 (Friday and Saturday nights it closes at 9:45). During reading period and exam period, both Lamont and the Science Center Library stay open 24/7.

As far as workout, you can go to the MAC (Malkin Athletic Center) which is near the river houses, or you can go to the Hemenway (the Law School gym). The Hemenway is a little nicer than the MAC (much nicer lighting, open spaces, decoration, locker rooms, etc) and has more free weights, the MAC has a pool and boxing rings, but both have basketball courts and TVs for cardio machines and both are perfectly adequate. Which is closer will depend on which dorm you get (North part of the yard is closer to Hemenway, South part is closer to the MAC).

In terms of meals, piccolojunior is right that the max the card-swiper will read is 99 (because they didn't want to extend it to three digits) but if you reach 99 it resets to 0. There was a kid that did this my freshman year just to see what happened. Domna was not amused (freshman will soon learn the pain and pleasure of Annenberg's favorite Greek card-swiper).

char6_0 has it covered pretty well on the party front.

Haha, thanks h-bomber for the corrections.

H-bomber is fierce. He reminds me of.... well.. me! :) :D

^plus he's posting on CC while doing research/secondaries....now that's ballin.
