Welcome to the GT, Class of '13

Hey all,

I'm writing this now because knowing my computer, it's gonna explode when decisions come out and everyone and their mom goes on CC.

You've probably seen me around this board (i've been here for awhile). If you haven't already figured it out, I applied last year and was given the guaranteed transfer option. At first I thought, "WT(#%%(#%(* is this @#(#", but after reflection, I realized it was actually for the best. My high school was garbage, and I really needed my freshman year here at another college to experience what it's like having REAL teachers and such. I've excelled throughout the year, and am definitely on target to successfully complete the GT.

I was thinking today on how I felt a year ago when I had no clue what a GT was or what the process entailed. I remember some veterans on the board like figgy, dr.mom, indigo, and dewdrop would share their transfer experiences and offer me very, very valuable advice. I feel like I have the responsibility to pass this along to the next class.

There are too many things to address in the GT to simply make a list. I will find the link to the old GT thread that has basically an answer to every question you're going to ask.

In addition to reading this and PM'ing current and former Gt's, I highly encourage you to meet with your kindred spirits over facebook. I made a group last year and after contacting the Cornell adcom I know about it, they want to try to make one through Cornell. However, these things hardly ever work, and I feel like you guys should make your own just in case. Here's a link to the one I created last year on this day:

Login | Facebook

^ If the facebook link doesn't work, just search for:
"Cornell '12 Guaranteed Transfers"

** Here's the link to the old GT thread that can answer your questions:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/cornell-university/319079-guaranteed-transfer-option.html

You have to really want Cornell to be crazy enough to do this, but I guarantee that you won't be alone and you won't regret it. Stay positive, look at the benefits (less $ more credits!) , and be active! Don't think the GT will work on its own, because you have to work in order to make it work.

Best of luck to you all, and Welcome to the Purgatory of the GT, Class of '13! :)

did you apply RD as a senior in HS then got the GT option?

grantortue applied ED.

yeah I applied ED, was deferred, and given a GT in RD

I am in the same situation, (received my GT last March) and it was definitely confusing at the time, especially since Cornell is basically the only school that does it. It’s definitely worth it though, I am really excited to go to Cornell next fall :)

Don’t be fooled though, at least in my case–you have to be REALLY proactive about planning out your classes and making sure you meet all the requirements. It’s work, but I felt like there was no way I would pass up getting an Ivy League education. Hope this helps!

I had a question regarding GT. You’re supposed to transfer in sophomore year, right? Say I go to an instate public which will give me mondo AP credit (I think around 40). I think I’d only need to take a few classes to finish the first year curriculum. Could I conceivably transfer in after only one semester?

I’m not sure if it’s “allowed”, but I know it’s definitely not recommended. Also, your AP scores have to be a 4 or 5 to be accepted by Cornell (doesn’t matter if your state school takes them), and i know CALS takes a 3 for calc. If you had 4’s and 5’s and still have 40 credit hours, I think the max may be 20. A year goes by really fast, I think transferring after the first semester would be a huge inconvenience

well cornell wouldn’t give me any for B Physics, and they’d give me a lot less for AP Spanish. Also, I took an English co-op course with the flagship State U (Basically, what we do in a year is equivalent to one semester at the college, and they give credit for that). So I’d have a lot less credit at Cornell (doesn’t have to do with scores).

In my experience, Cornell has explicitly said that you need to take the required COURSES for your specific major to meet the terms of your GT. It’s not about the credit – we all did AP or IB and would get tons more credit at state schools than at Cornell. The point is to see if you can do the coursework at a university. Taking Bio 101 or its equivalent at a state school is likely going to be much tougher than AP Bio in high school was because you’re going to be up against pre-meds, for example. Cornell just wants to see you do the work.

ok, that makes sense. thanks for the help.

No, AP and courses during the summer do not count. Like Indigo said, it’s really to see if you can handle the course load. The BIO requirement was definitely the most difficult aspect for me…especially as a Journalism major up against all the Premeds.

Also, if you are going through with it, make SURE you find out what the prereqs for certain classes are at your GT university. For example, I knew the school I was going to this year offered Statistics (one of the required courses) but the prerequisite to take it was College ALgebra. So I had to take that in the summer just so I could get IN to the prereq class.

Ha I got rejected; doesn’t matter

Looks like I got GT. I’m not really sure how to feel about it.

Grantorture

My daughter is also joining the GT, class of 2013!

Thank you so much for starting this thread. We will follow your excellent advice.

I just knew she would get the GT.

Remember the great “verification conspiracy” thread? The due date to turn in the paperwork was 2010. That screamed GT to me!

Forgot to say that she was deferred ED, Cals Bio.

well tell your daughter if she works hard, she will be ecstatic a year from now. At 5:02 pm, I was e-mailed my acceptance :)

grantorture

I wanted to thank you as well…I found out today I was offered GT…CALS Biology…all of this information, and the links have been great, I was kind of confused initially as to the exact guidelines of the “transfer option” that we had been offered…so thank you very much!!

Congrats Grantortue! So happy for you!

I created a facebook group for 2013 GTs…its called “Cornell Guaranteed Transfer 2013”, everyone should join so we can all keep in touch and help each other out!!

I’m confused - my son was talking to friends of his that were rejected from Cornell and offered GT, my son is on the wailist and not offered GT - why is that. He applied to Engineering.
