So what are the "You-cannot-miss-this" events for welcome week? Unfortunately I couldn't make it to Berkeley today (Sunday 20th) but I'll be there tomorrow. I'm going to have some other stuff to do as well during the week, so are there any events that I absolutely have to go to?

I realize its different for different ppl. So far I'm planning on the the events that help talk about undergraduate research, the physics/astronomy launch day, and hopefully the tour of the physics library. At least. There are other things, like sunset at Campanile, that I'd like to do, but what do you guys think is the most important, and also what events are largely a waste of time?

I'm sure there must be lots of people that don't go to everything. What do they do, just hang out with friends and stuff? Any specific places you'd recommend where people hang out so I can meet some new ppl? I have friends at Cal already but I'd really like to meet some new ppl, and I'm afraid I'm a bit behind the curve since I still don't have a facebook or anything, so most of the new ppl I meet will be total unknowns to me.

if you're looking to get involved in any activities or organizations on campus, then i would definitely recommend going to calapalooza, which i believe is thursday. all of the clubs will be there with a table, so you can meet people in those clubs and then sign up for their email lists so that you can be informed of what they're doing. it's also nice cuz all the related clubs are usually together...like, the cultural clubs and academic clubs and sports type clubs are usually close to one another. so ya, whether you know what you want to join, or are just shopping around, there will be a lot for you to see there.

Yes I believe Calapalooza is a must. The convocation was interesting. Undergrad research was somewhat useful. Umm...some random orientations here and there. For example, if you are an engineering student then the orientation for engineering students would be pretty useful.

Meet new people? Start with the people on your floor. Then try the floors above and below yours. If you are in the units (hallway style) this is more than enough people.

The Campanile will be open for sunset viewing -- which it never is during the rest of the year -- tonight and Thursday night. The views from the Campanile are awesome, so if you're into the sunset watching thing, I'd definitely recommend that (7:30-9pm). You won't get another chance anytime soon.

Second the recommendation for Calapalooza. If nothing else, people will be giving away free stuff. There will be a ton of people out there that will be browsing the same sets of clubs you will be, so it's also a great way to meet a few new people.

If you haven't purchased your software and computers yet, consider browing the Cal computer sale. The student store is also having a Twilight Madness sale 6-10pm on Friday, which you might consider taking advantage of for school supplies, clothing and used books (though it will undoubtedly be extremely crowded).

The dorms are your best bet for meeting people at the start. Don't be afraid to leave your door open or go visit others who have their doors open.
