Stern Class of 2014,
First off, congratulations on making an amazing decision, that is sure to pay off big time in the long run. Secondly, welcome to Stern! The biggest reason I made this thread is to help guide you guys through the transition and introduction in your freshman year. Our welcome week is COMPLETELY different than the rest of the school, chiefly because it is so structured and it is actually Orientation, so you dont get to do any of the fun Welcome Week events everyone else participates in. This is fine though, since you get to start building community, and forge tight bonds right away. So I am here to answer and any questions you may have at all regarding move in and stern orientation/welcome week, but also any questions pertaining to Stern specifically you may have (ie classes, professors, the whole dean situation, internships, jobs, partying, cohorts, friends, going out, food, etc). So please don't be shy and ask away!

Hi, i was wondering how hectic moving in can be for Goddard. Or is it just generally the same as the other dorms?

also, what is the stern orientation like? full-schedule every day?

and lastly, i was wondering what business core students feel about business & political economy students, in academic/social aspects.

thanks :))

Hey Madhatter! So let me answer your questions.

a) Move in day is hectic in all dorms. However, Goddard, being the quaint little dorm that it is, has less bodies to move in, equating to a somewhat more reasonable move in time. Some pointers for you–
Don’t get there at the crack of dawn! Move in starts at like, 7am or something. Get there around noon or later, and you skip the lines completely.
Have your walking shoes on–you WILL be having to lug things up and down the stairs, so make sure you dress comfortably and get a good nights sleep.
Don’t overpack!–Utilize NYU’s Bed Bath and Beyond, as well as their KMart program!! Both are awesome resources, and are sure to have all of your needs. This way, you can unpack in strides so you are not completely overwhelmed.

Stern Orientation–Expect to be busy doing Stern things–presentations from certain departments, placement exams, volunteering, team building stuff, central park excursions, US OPEN OF TENNIS!!!,etc. They basically keep you occupied from 9am to like 3pm or later EVERY DAY. All Stern events, so you miss the opportunity to do a lot of the Welcome Week activities and meet a bunch of people. But it’s ok–Stern gets you lunch every day, and you forge a strong bond with your cohort (and a rivalry with others!). haha. It is tiring, yes, but fun at the same time.

As for your last question, some of my best friends were in BPE. Everyone knows that they are selective, and for the most part, they have their own curriculum, with a few classes scattered with the rest of Stern. People generally think of them being really smart, but with ugly girls. Lots of them transferred out of it, though, chiefly because of all the changes going on (key professors leaving, dean leaving, having to go abroad during prime recruiting season), and they trickled into the rest of Stern. They really don’t have a distinct social character about them, so I guess that doesn’t really matter.

thank you for the advice!
also, US Open? eh? no way! do we get to go?

yes, you get a free ticket to the US Open on the friday of welcome week, as well as the round trip subway card paid for too! And an awesome NYU Stern shirt to wear. Last year, they were there the day Klijsters qualified for the finals or something ridiculous like that.

Aafter doing Welcome Week for 2 years, in my opinion, noon is quite possibly the busiest time for move-in. Everyone is pouring in, and from 11-1PM traffic around WSQ is insanely high. Just my experience.

YES! Im so excited now!
