It might be part of the dorm assignment package, I just cannot remember. What I do know is that Tulane has detailed plans depending on the exact nature of the storm. If a total evacuation is called for, they will take whatever students don’t have other options to a safe location inland. It used to be Jackson Mississippi, but I think they changed it to Birmingham. Anyway, they have cooperative plans with other schools to help out. During Gustav, students were able to stay on campus in certain buildings like Reilly. Many left anyway.

So to answer your question, it is not terrible to leave her in the hands of Tulane if that means evacuating under Tulane’s plan. That in itself is a plan, and a perfectly good one. Just might not be quite as comfortable for a couple of days than other options, but on the other hand the kids had a great time bonding last year. Lots of singing, game playing, eating, etc.

I don’t think it’s terrible at all - the last minute plane tickets are expensive and there is no way to know when they will be returning, so that is another ticket! And it is a bit of an adventure. Some just might not be in for the big group thing. We live within driving distance (6 hours - longer during hurricane evacuation) and S1 has a car and lives off campus so evacuating with S2 wouldn’t be an option for him, so our plan is to just come home together.

I think it is just on the housing website because it is a good place to consolidate all information as to the location on-campus students (the only ones Tulane is responsible for in the event of evacuation). I don’t think it has anything to do with dorm assignments.

How about they all get together and rent a car and they can drive to our house in NW Louisiana? The worst we’ve ever had it from a hurricane was losing a few shingles when Rita came through a bit after Katrina. Katrina never touched us. I told D she might have to take the bus here as I don’t want to have to drive down there to get her! Of course there are the free evacuation buses that come right to our town…hahaha

She did finally start the book yesterday when she discovered our internet was down. I think she got the forward and introduction read.

We got our hotel booked for the night before move-in, but then I realized that we probably won’t be down there early enough to meet everyone because we can’t leave until S16 is out of school at 2:30 - they start school next week. Yikes.

My kid started last year. As requested, we made all kinds of contingency plans with friends in Houston and Baton Rouge and Nola.

Kid moved in on Saturday afternoon. Wife got back home Sunday afternoon and we immediately booked a plane flight home for the kid for Monday or Tuesday. There were lots of available seats. Never even contacted any of our evac plan friends.

Kid went to class on Monday, then stayed in the dorms for the storm beginning Tuesday – basically hurricane party orientation. Re-used the ticket for Christmas. The rule in our house is that you don’t go to a college beyond driving distance unless Southwest flies there direct!!

book reading update…actually spotted DS reading the book! I checked his bookmark…he is on Chapter 2…says he likes it…will stop annoying him now!!

Regarding the hurricane plan: our D will drive to family in FL or friends in TX, depending on the storm. We told her renting a car is for EMERGENCIES only!

OMG - went to have my Tulane shirt today “customized” for move in weekend w/my CC name + FC logo - they ruined the shirt - so annoyed. The paper on back of the iron lettering stuck into the shirt + won’t peel off!!!

Bloomy! you are cracking me up! Were you really having your shirt customized? Time to order a new shirt! I still think that the bookstore should offer a FCFC option!
Question? If move in is August 24th, on what date do you plan to ship your boxes down?

Y’all are too funny with the shirts! I’m still not sure if we’ll be there early enough on Friday night to meet up with everyone, but at least I’ll be able to find you if we do!

I am enjoying reading along, even though mine is launched. Want to hear more about these shirts!!

And the rental car arrangement with Enterprise is BRILLIANT. In bad weather they want to get their cars outta there and not be flooded. And then they want them back. Brilliant Truly brilliant. So the fact that the cars will probably smell like stale cheese doodles, pop tarts and gatorade is a small price to pay…

Jozuko - my S’ notes for early shipping said to get his two NOLA boxes down there by 8/13. So we’re packing up those for shipment out on Friday.

Our last big family vacation to Virginia Beach precludes us from shipping next week.

The other boxes will go out when we get back.

Evac plan - Will check out the Enterprise deal on move-in day, but we thought we’d just fly him to Atlanta to stay with friends.

Finding this forum today with helpful people and great advice has made starting out on our Tulane experience easier by a lot. The last few days have been eventful with the receipt of our student’s (son-Freeman School of Business) mail box address and dorm assignment (Warren). Look forward to contributing as we get more knowledgeable and hope to meet many of you during move-in week.
