Welcome AZmustang!

The Huffington Post has a nice article entitled “Starting College: A Guide for Parents: 2013.” (8/2/13) It reminds me of my own college move in which was pretty much a disaster. Within five minutes of arriving on campus, my dad got angry with all of the parking rules and lashed out at a cute upperclassman embarrassing me so much I went back later and apologized. Later my sister gashed her chin putting together a table and almost needed stitches. Now I forgive my dad because I understand the high emotions involved for everyone in the family. That’s why I’m going to try hard to make this day all about my daughter and listen/watch hard for her cues on how much help she wants or doesn’t want. I’m thinking about what it will be like for her and how she wants to make the perfect first impression which means my husband, son and I need to stay in the background. My sister told me later that when they they stopped for dinner after leaving me, my mom leaned over the table announcing to my dad that if I did not like college it would be 100% his fault! The emotions here were compounded by the fact that I was attending his alma mater! I’m hoping for a lot less drama when we repeat this ritual at Tulane later this month! :)

We are thinking about an airline gift card ( kind of a pre-paid voucher) that S can use as necessary as part of the evacuation plan or later for semester break!

Love your story, sportsforher!

I think I remember reading somewhere something about students registering their computers before they get to campus. is anyone familiar with this???

Bloomy, I just read about that in the orientation book - it starts on page 49.

Oh - thanks - I will check it out!

My S is in Monroe - is it carpeted or do we need to buy a rug?

Hi Bloomy, I am pretty sure that it is carpeted, but I’m not sure how nice (and by nice, I mean clean and sanitary!) it is. I know that in a lot of schools, kids buy an area rug (maybe 10’x10’?) and cover the carpet. Does anyone know if they do this at TU? Also, is this more of a “girl” thing? Wouldn’t want S to feel unmanly!

S1 was in Sharp. I have to say that I was surprised that the carpet was pretty nice compared to what I was expecting. I don’t know how they compare and when each has been replaced but that was just a couple of years ago. Since you could barely see the carpet for most of the school year, it was still in great shape when he and his roommate moved out! They did not buy a separate rug to put over it and I think it’s best to wait and see what it looks like when you get there. It might just end up being something extra to trip over. Girls may feel differently than boys about that. I know my D went the distance on the dorm room decorating, but the boys really aren’t all that into the fix up your dorm room thing from what I have seen.

This is a computer related question: Do students need to register their computers in advance in order to get online access when they arrive on campus? I seem to recall something about this but cannot find where i read about it.

NewcombNewcomb

Disregard that last post, please. It’s early out west! To register computers for campus wireless, go to tulane.edu/tsweb/wireless
It can be done online from what I’ve read! My S just registered his.

Speaking of Newcomb, for those of you that have the time and interest during move-in weekend, there is an exhibit on campus about sports and Tulane, with a lot of focus on the very rich history and innovation regarding women’s PE at Newcomb around the turn of the 20th century. Also, it reminded me of something I had forgotten. Did you all know that before the building of the now defunct Tulane Stadium (Sugar Bowl), Tulane played its games on what is now the Monroe Quad? I guess there were fairly basic stands built along the sidelines. Don’t know if they have pictures of that in the exhibit or not.
Wait, so Bed Bath and Beyond will only hold the order at the store for 3 days? We just spent about an hour shopping online, checking each item one at a time to see if it’s available in Metairie, and then at checkout they say “items will be held for 3 days”.

Well… THAT doesn’t help! It just means I have to do the whole exercise again before I leave here next week.

Grrrrr

Mavitale. I don’t think that is correct (3 day hold at BBB). When you did your pack and hold didn’t you fill out a form and say what day you would be picking it up? I know I did.

Hm, no… it didn’t give me that option. I will call the store tomorrow.Thanks.

OK, pack and hold gives you ‘future ship date’. I don’t want them to ship anything… just hold it at the store for pickup next Friday.

MaVitale–Why arent you going to your local BBB with the “bar code gun” selecting all your stuff? Then you just pick it up in NOLA (only what you want) and pay for it there?

Sorry–didnt see Jozuko’s post. In other words, you aren’t shopping online. You are going to BBB, registering as a Tulane student, and selecting what you want to pick up there. I just changed my date of pickup and the NOLA store said, “no problem.”
