Can anyone tell me about this whole Welcome Week situation? I'd love to get to know people in the dorms and in my major, but I'm not going to be thrilled about it if they force me to go to these lectures (I read on some blog they have a schedule of lectures about relationships, life, etc.? What?) or this race thing, etc.. Basically, is attendance required at every event?

Not all of the events are mandatory but there are like 2 or 3 that are mandatory (and they’re really not all that bad). There’s a lot of other cool, fun stuff you can do that’s optional.

Ok, good, that’s a relief; I don’t think I could take five days straight of nonstop social activities. What do they actually do?

Oh yeah it’s not like it’s nonstop lol Last year they had a lot of sports games, a scavenger hunt one night in the library (it was a lot of fun), a dive in movie (also a lot of fun lol), panels for different groups/clubs, open pool, etc. They have all kinds of stuff. If you go on the website you can actually find the schedule from last year. There’s also convocation (mandatory). You can participate in as many or as few of the optional events as you like. Sometimes it was nice to just relax with your roommate/suitemates and bond.

The only thing I did not like about Welcome Week was the eating schedule. You had to eat with your floor at certain scheduled times. Our CAs made our floor sit together (I would guess the other floors did the same thing too). It just felt more like a summer camp than college. Nevertheless, they have to assign you an eating time (there’s no getting around it) and it did allow for great floor bonding. It wasn’t too bad but it’s the one thing I just didn’t care for. Everything else about Welcome Week was great :)

I don’t really remember much about welcome week other than we had to go to a bunch of mandatory programs with our floor, do icebreaker activities with our floor, and eat with our floor; it felt like summer camp. The only fun things I remember were the hypnotist and running around and doing icebreakers in the gym/tennis courts.
