What are some well-known colleges with good math programs, besides usual places like Caltech or MIT? Thanx.

Princeton! VERY strong math

NYU....wow someone fix the character limit :(

I hear Columbia's is great

Stanford, Reed, Harvey Mudd

I second Princeton...not just because I like it, but because it really does have a great math program.

I've heard a lot about Stanford's math and science programs being the Ivies on the West.

I doubt I could get into Princeton, but Columbia would be kinda cool. I know their applied math is part of Fu, which is a bit easier to get into...

Are you sure that Fu is that easy to get into? I'd imagine the students who apply to Fu are somewhat more self-selecting that those who apply to Princeton.

There are a ton of well-known colleges with good math programs. Do you have any other criteria?

somewhere colder, and preferably east coast. About Fu, I just figured the ccepetance is like 30%, as opposed to 10% for Princeton.

Right, but s'vrone raised a good point: those who apply to a math program are most likely much more qualified and "self-selected" in the field of math. So, the statistic of 30%, which seems high, is in reality quite low considering the credientials of such an applicant pool in the specific field. So, that program should not be underestimated because of its high acceptance rate.

Williams College has great math.

nyu's courant institute is amazing. a very good program located in a nice area. the building its housed in is also very distinctive.

i second courant. my comp sci teacher and math teacher went there. Harvard has good math iirc

All of these schools are so difficult for me. I will be looking at schools such as PSU, UMD,Bing, and SBU. How are the math programs in these schools?

UMD has a pretty good math dept, according to a friend who is majoring in math.

I third myself on Courant. lol.

Giving us some stats would help us narrow the list. Anyway, Math, like English, are the two traditional majors of most universities. As such, many universities have excellent math departments. Some that come to mind include:

California Institute of Technology
Columbia University
Cornell University
Harvard University
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
New York University
Princeton University
Stanford University
University of California-Berkeley
University of Chicago
University of Michigan-Ann Arbor
Yale University

Washington U St Louis
Ohio State
SUNY Stony Brook
Penn St UP

SUNY Buffalo

Highest rate of math ph.d's produced (if that matters) outside the techs is St. Olaf. Higher than most of the Ivies, AWS, and much higher than virtually every one of the above named schools.
