So just to give you an idea for the type of schools I'm looking at, I'll be applying ED to Cornell which I'm pretty sure I'll be rejected so thereafter I will be applying to Boston College, Boston U, American, Trinity, Holy Cross, Brandeis, Case, and Tufts. I have some safeties in mind like Drew since the campus is really nice and it seems pretty similar to the other schools and OSU since I'm in-state but I know I'd be disappointed if I ended up at either one of these schools or even at Case since I live like 30 mins from it. So anybody have any ideas for other similar schools comparable to my choices? Also as you can see the general trend is that I'd like my school to be in or very near a big city. Thanks ahead of time!

Northeastern?

Oh yeah! I forgot I’m applying there too, lol. Sorry.

How many safeties do you really need? American and Boston U should be safe matches or safeties for someone with a serious shot at Cornell.

Clark and Syracuse are other possibilities.

I would scratch Drew and Case. Don’t apply to a school that you’d be disappointed to attend. You have far too many options.

Ha, thanks. Drew and Case are good schools but in comparison to the others I’d be disappointed if I ended up there. And I’m just really paranoid about rejection.

Here are my stats:
- rank somewhere in the top 10 of my class out of ~700, not exactly sure where though
-4.0 uw gpa, 4.8333 w
-all honors and AP with 6 APs senior year - first generation and fluent in 2 languages, moderate in a 3rd
- ECs are okay I think, nothing spectacular really. Secretary of Spanish Club (going for president this year), freshman mentor, Cleveland Zoo volunteer, Girls State delegate, job at a grocery store, first chair of my section in orchestra (but I had to quit because of scheduling conflicts) and I might begin volunteering at a hospital and children’s home, have done costumes for the school play, etc etc
- 29 ACT, this is where the problem is. I got a 30+ in each section except I had about a fifth of the science section to go so I only got a 25 there bringing all of my 30+s down. Of course I will be retaking and plan to do some hardcore studying (any tips for the science section, anyone?)

uhh…what about taking the SATs? For some people, SATs work out much better than the ACTs do.

I’m kind of nervous about the vocab section on it since I learned English second and I’m already really familiar with the ACT, it’s a midwest thing you know. According to my PSAT, they sent me a thing saying that I’d probably fall between 2000-2150ish or so if I remember correctly, so that’s pretty much the same range as where I’m at for the ACT right now according to conversion charts so I figured I have a better chance at a higher score on the ACT than the SAT due to familiarity.

You should try the SAT, though.

As in, just take a practice test from the Blue Book.

Ok, maybe I will. Thanks guys.

Not a safety by any stretch but also suggest looking into Georgetown and Fordham which are Jesuit colleges like BC and Holy Cross but in DC and NYC respectively.

Wheaton in MA

Providence College.

Many schools, especially ones that prefer the SAT, don’t consider the science section of the ACT. They just ask for your Math and Reading (or whatever they call it) sections, and maybe writing.

Pitt, UMD College Park (about 10 minutes from D.C.) , Delaware (only about 15 minutes from Philly)

Remember, safety is a place you know you are pretty likely to get into. You don’t have to initially like your safety, it is your last option, but as long as it is better then going to a community college or living at home and applying again for spring entrance somewhere. You can always go to you safety for a semester and then try to transfer.

Safety Ideas: UMass Amherst, Union College (NY)

You can definitely look at schools like Brown, Harvard, Colombia, Amherst College, Williams College, Smith College, Wellesley College, NYU, Wesleyan, Yale, Connecticut College, Bowdoin College and Bates College

Another vote for Fordham. A great school and (I think) while not a safety safety, a very reasonable match for you.

You want to be in or near a big city but you are applying ED to Cornell? Have you visited Cornell?

I got in EA with 82% FA at Colby-Sawyer College. So I’ll advice those who need substantial financial aid to apply to Colby-Sawyer. And the following articles may be interesting to you.

That’s terrible advice. You owe it to yourself to look around for a safety that you would actually want to attend, not just one that is better than going to a community college. There are hundreds of colleges across the country that would be a safety for you, there must be at least one or two that you’d be happy with. You don’t want to end up going to a safety you hate if you don’t end up getting into the other schools.

I wouldn’t write off Cornell. Your ACT is not bad enough to keep you out, especially if you got 30+ on every other section. When I was disappointed with my SAT score, I was in a similar position where many people told me to try to ACT. However, I realized that it would be a lot easier to improve on a 2240 than try to learn a whole new test. Go over your ACT book or buy a science section book? (If those are available; I know they have section work books for the SAT). What you need to take are SAT 2’s, which are required by Cornell and several of the other institutions mentioned.
