Community Service/Internships:
The summer after my 10th grade year I went to live with a family(Baptist Pastor) in Monterrey, Mexico for 3 weeks and worked in the church with children and such, then this summer I went again for another 2 weeks and did the same thing, he wrote a letter verifyng 120 hours of community service while I was there, but besides just that I am going to write about it as being a life changing experience in my essay which it kind of was.

Internship at a Real Estate Investors office that my dad knows.( He also happens to be Joe Libermans Nephew which could help considerably for yale considering he is a senator from conneticut and went to yale)

Thats everything I can remember off the top of my head, my essay will be good, I have a college admissions helper who is going to revise and edit.

Ok now the list:

UC Berkely
UCLA
UC Irvine
USC
U of Texas(Austin)
Tufts
Georgetown
Yale
Brown
U Penn(Wharton)
Cornell
NYU
Duke

Oh also I do this form of Martial Arts from Israel called Krav Maga, I have been doing it for about a year, I am a practitioner 1, which means I know all of the basics(takes 6-8 months to get).

Alrighty what are my chances?, and if you know another good match for me, let me know also, thanks a bunch

Interning at the firm of a nephew of a Yale alum will really do nothing for you. Sorry. Too many 'degrees of separation'.

We can't really chance you without your telling us where you stand among your peers -- i.e. class rank.

instate CALIFORNIA i'm assuming
UC Berkely - Match
UCLA - Match
UC Irvine - Safety
USC - Match
U of Texas(Austin) - Match
Tufts - Match
Georgetown Low Reach/Match
Yale - Reach
Brown - Low Reach
U Penn(Wharton) - Low Reach/Reach
Cornell - Low Reach/Reach
NYU - Match
Duke - Low Reach/Reach

I agree with Nader mostly but I'd call Brown a reach rather than just a low reach especially because I think they do use the writing portion of the SAT. I'd also call Cornell just a low reach as it's not that tough to get into compared to, well, Yale.

I think Tufts Georgetown Brown Upenn Yale and Cornell are all reaches for you

The guy I am interning with is my dads business partner of 9 years, oh and do you know who Joe Liberman is, he was going to be Gore's vice president? and is the current senator of conneticut, so that would help immensely for yale, but what do you guys think about georgetown, do you think I have a solid chance there? And will that Mexico thing help?

Oh btw my school doesnt rank, but I know im in the top 10% because I won some award from the UC system that says u are. Also I am pretty sure I am in the top 5% just because I know the smart kids at my school and I have a fairly high GPA, the highest in my class is only a 4.6 weighted. I might even be in the top 10 kids in my class.

Dirthog, I know who Joe Lieberman is but it's not like working for someone who is related to him is going to translate into a boost for you. It's definitely a nice job to have on your resume, but it's not like you are Joe Lieberman's nephew yourself.

The thing about the Mexico program is that it's a great program. But mostly it means that you have the money to do a homestay in Mexico and work with a local church. It's great that you're going back, don't get me wrong. But the 'I went to a third world country and it changed my life essay' is trite and overdone. And considering that you're not even sure it did (You're not heading fundraiser for this community in Mexico) it would be an ineffective essay topic.

I'm going to agree with lolabelle, the top schools on your list are reaches, as they are for anyone. I'd go so far as to add NYU to that list if you're applying to Stern.

You're a good applicant. But you're going to need great letters of recommendation (and not from Lieberman's nephew) in order to get you in. And your AP scores had better be solid (4s and 5s only, please).

You seem a bit naive about what it takes to get into a top school like Yale. It's more than you think. Work hard on your application. But I would not be surprised if Georgetown or Cornell were the only reaches you got into, if any.

Best of luck.

Im hoping from a letter form Liberman not his nephew, but we will see, and it wasnt a money thing in Mexico that allowed me to go, its actually an interesting story, I am fully aware that it takes a lot to get into yale, im not expecting to get in, but there is always hope, oh I am wondering, my ap scores are bad, do you have to put them in your application?

^No. Do NOT get a letter from Lieberman. Letters from people who DON'T KNOW YOU won't do you any good.

And no, you do not have to send your AP scores. But if it says AP on your transcript, and you don't send them. It will send up a red flag, adcoms will assume they're bad.

I am pretty sure that if you send ur SAT score, then all the AP scores will go too.

Well they are kind bad here they are:
AP World:3
Ap Spanish:3
AP Calc AB: 5
AP Calc BC:4
AP Physics C:2,1
AP Eng.:3

Next year I am taking AP Stats, AP environmental science, AP Govt

Oh and ses, I am trying to be nice and inform you on something about life not necesarily college, its not what you know necesarily its who you know, learn that and understand it, if you get a letter from the senator of the state that the school is in, you are basically in if you have descent academics, who do you think gives out the grants to these schools? not to mention hes yale alum. all the letter has to say is let this kid in, plus I would be a good student there anyway probably

naderboy's chances are generous. with your scores, i'd say any ivy is a reach.

dirthog,

Although I appreciate that having connections is a way to get into college, you don't really have one. If anything, an extra letter that says nothing other than 'they seem nice' won't hurt your chances.

From what you've said, you don't a personal relationship with Mr. Lieberman. And you probably don't even have a personal relationship with his nephew. You work (admittedly many tiers below) someone related to someone important.

Were Mr. Lieberman to encounter you and find you to be incredibly bright/unique and then write a letter, unsolicited, to Yale commenting on your personal qualities, then it would certainly help.

But anything outside of those circumstances leaves you with a lukewarm rec and the appearance that you're trying to game the system, which you are.

The letter does not guarantee you a spot at Yale. Far from it.

Not at all, Collegeboard completely separates their AP system and their SAT system.

I agree with ses

Ok anyone else with my chances besides like the 1 or 2?
