Well, this is it. Son heads to USNA CVW tomorrow.

He's held off making a decision about schools until he finishes this CVW. He got into almost every school he applied to and received some startling merit aid to schools he already had a MROTC scholarship for... making for very nice ego strokes but challenging decisions. He's fine, patient and ready for tomorrow. I'm not patient and can't wait to hear from him Saturday afternoon.

One question; he's in to Annapolis by 11 am tomorrow morning but doesn't report til 5 pm. I told him to ask the airport shuttle driver for a coffee shop that is close to the gate where he can hole up and do homework til closer to 5. Anybody know of anything within walking distance where he can spend that time? I don't know the area...

TIA.

there is plenty to do in DTA (Down Town Annapolis) within walking distance of the gate. There is a Starbuck's less than half a block from Gate 1. There are ice cream shops, t-shirt shops, and plenty more.

While Annapolis is generally a safe environment, he could go ahead and go on the yard and go over to the Nimitz library to study.
Once he explained the purpose of his presence to staff, I am reasonablyh confident they would let him stay and, probably, let him use computers, etc.
Just a suggestion.

Visitors to Nimitz just need to check in at the circulation desk. Drydock restaurant is also open every day from eight AM to ten PM.

I've left all your helpful info on his cell phone for him so he can have those options when he gets there. Thank you so much! He's a very experienced traveler so I'm not too worried about him. Just hope he actually gets some of his work done as senioritis has bit him bigtime!

Pmarol - my daughter has her CVW this weekend as well. I am anxious to hear all about it when she returns on Saturday!

All I know so far is that he kept saying "Its so beautiful here." as he walked around. He had a good chat with the admissions folks about his dual citizenship status (US and Australia) and about validation issues. I just can't wait to hear from him tomorrow!

Here are a few comments from him after his CVW. Apparently, the plebe he was assigned to wasn't the best host in the world. I guess he wasn't terribly social or motivated or something... Son said that he saw all the other kids who were visiting doing all sorts of things but that his guy just wanted to sit in his room silently the whole time! Son was able to look past the individual to the rest of the place and see the options. The guy's roommate saved the visit for him, talking and answering questions and encouraging him.

One of his high points was running into another appointee that he had been at Wrestling Camp with last summer. That guy had the same other school options and MROTC option that my son has so they were able to compare notes about their evaluations.

Son was delighted to find that he knew everything covered in all the classes and is no longer worried as much about academics as he was. He raved about all the intramural options and can't decide if he wants to major in chemistry or mechanical engineering more - it keeps going back and forth.

The negative for him (Yes, he's still undecided) he said that it is "My current school x 2" He's been at a college prep boarding school (not military) for 4 years and has been in charge of his dorm for the last 2 years. He's having to think about MROTC versus service academy.

Given that he is a dual citizen and has to revoke this before I-day, I've told him that time is up, he's got to make a decision sooner rather than later.

(In case someone searching this forum for info on dual citizenship in the future wonders, the admissions office has told me that as long as I can show them notarized proof that the papers to revoke have been filed, he can get in... The Australian Consulate says that it can take a YEAR to get his citizenship revoked and sheesh! he does NOT have a year!)

So, no clearcut decision yet but he's getting there... He's staying another day in Annapolis with family to visit.

Whew! Can't wait til I know what he wants to do!
