Strengths: essays, grades, scores (maybe)
Weaknesses: supplement (didn’t take it as seriously as I should have), Extracurriculars???
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: well, I love to write and my sat writing section was the best so that helped reflect it (and I’ve also taken a couple college classes); I’m pretty well-rounded (I like just about every subject at least a little bit)
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: Stetson, Spring Hill, Washington and Jefferson, Hanover College; Deferred: Harvard; Waiting on about nine other schools.
General Comments: to those of you who didn’t hear what they wanted: trust me, I’ve been there (and still currently am) and you’re awesome and you’ll find the place you’re meant to be at; to those accepted: congrats; to the kids who are looking at these stats and preparing for the not too distant future: your application will be different from everybody else…if you really want to attend go for it…and don’t second guess yourselves because you never know. OMG I’m just really excited that I got accepted though-celebrating with ice cream and sprinkles for dinner!

State (if domestic applicant): Illinois
School Type: Public Magnet, Large (2000+)
Ethnicity: African American
Gender: Female duhzzuh. Wait I shouldn’t say that, since trans males and such.
Income Bracket: Middle middle class, but single parent income (Let’s say more than the 60,000 ivy free ride, but less than 100,000)
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM
Reflection
Strengths: National Award (Acadec. Go Join.), NaNoWriMo winner, essays (I assume), strong ACT scores (SAT was pretty bad)
Weaknesses: SAT, Grades (I have had a 3.5 since freshman year since I have gotten As in everything but Cs in math. Always. So it balances out)
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Maybe because I had something different that they thought I could offer. Acadec isn’t super common, and NaNoWriMo isn’t well known in general either, not that it’s a legitimate activity (but if you do it put it down!). Also I have an athletics/academics balance.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted everywhere so far; Tulane (Paul Tulane Scholarship), University of Alabama, Clark University (Worcester), Marquette Waiting on: Yale, Vassar, Williams, Macalester aka all of my really hard schools

General Comments: Congrats to everyone who got in! And good luck to everyone who got a possibly! For those who didn’t get what they wanted, remember that college is what you make of it and this one school isn’t going to make or break you. Only you can do that. Also for those future people don’t freak out about the stats, in a good or bad way. Each person is just that: a person. Wellesley as well as most of the competitive schools spend a lot of time looking at the you who got put down on paper so make sure that your Common App reflects as much of you as possible, no matter how weird, silly, or trivial it may seem. It might just be what gets you in! I’m buying myself Crumbs cupcakes to celebrate, and those of you in NYC/Chicago/LA/Have a cupcake store near you should too! It helps mend broken hearts and celebrate full ones!

Essays: I can’t honestly say whether or not they were amazing…but for my Why Wellesley I honestly just put what I thought why Wellesley would make me into a better person and a better student. I had fun writing my Common App essay! I wrote about my mother singing opera in the supermarket ;D
Teacher Recommendation: I got one from my Calc teacher who had me for fmy reshman and junior year. We’re pretty close and I’ve clearly demonstrated my work ethic in his class. I also got one from my Psych teacher who is also the adviser for the club I’m the president of.
Counselor Rec: It’s the standard “fill out this form and I’ll write one for you” kinda thing since my class is so ginormous.
Interview: It lasted for an hour and a half O_O I’m not sure what to think of it, but I think that it went relatively well.

Reflection: I don’t think I could have done anything to improve my application! I’m perfectly content with Wellesley’s decision, and although it has been my dream school for a really long time… I’m okay with being a “possibly”. I think it’s just not the right school for me…it seems super duper intense and I really don’t want to be in the same environment as my ultra competitive hs for another 4 years.
Strengths: Test Scores
Weaknesses: GPA
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think I got a possibly because of my GPA. And because a lot of other highly statted girls from my hs also applied…
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Early write from Smith so far :)

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): School newspaper (co-editor-in-chief), stage crew (stage manager), church youth group, columnist for town newspaper, student docent at local art museum, debate team during grades 9 and 10, lots of art classes (I submitted an arts supplement). I also did an independent study my junior year in art history since my school doesn’t offer a course, but I didn’t really know where to put that on my resume…
Job/Work Experience: Assistant to a local artist during grade 12
Volunteer/Community service: NHS tutoring, summer service trips with church youth group, volunteering at local retirement home twice a month
Summer Activities: Mostly art classes at my local studio. The summer between freshman and soph years I took a journalism workshop with the Yale Daily News for a week. And then the mission trips. In 2011 I went to Bridgeport, CT, to help at our sister parish, and then last year we went to DC.
Essays: Pretty good. My common app one was about my favorite sportswriter and how his writing influenced my photography. My Why Wellesley one was really specific and talked about things from El Table to the Dead Serious improv troupe, so I think it showed I researched the school.
Teacher Recommendation: Didn’t see, but probably very strong. I am very close with both teachers.
Counselor Rec: Again, didn’t see, but my counselor mangaed to get to know me fairly well in my big school, so I guess good.
Additional Rec: none
Interview: Went great! My alumnae interviewer was so nice, and told me I’d do well wherever I went.

Reflection
Strengths: Recs/essays/interview, decent test scores (I never quite knew how schools would interpret that 630 in the SAT math… I hate math :P)
Weaknesses: Course rigor until senior year, relatively few ECs (the school newspaper is the only one I did for all four years)
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I really don’t know! So many people here who got possibled have way better stats! I guess I showed dedication to my two main extracurricular interests (art, which I listed as a possible major, and journalism), and my essays/recs/interview made up the rest!
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted to Smith (early write) and Ithaca; still waiting from Vassar, Mount Holyoke, Skidmore, and Clark. But Wellesley is definitely tied for tops with Smith. So happy! Good luck to everyone else; you all seem like amazing people, and I wish you success wherever you end up.

Reflection
Strengths: Essays, course load
Weaknesses: test scores and a lack of leadership positions.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Honestly, having both URM and legacy status definitely had to help me out somewhere. I also think the upward trend in my GPA was good since my GPA isn’t that high. I read over my essays a few days ago and I liked them still. I feel like since I’m a URM legacy, Wellesley was really more looking for a reason not to accept me. I can’t say if anything in my application really stood out positively above the rest (I hope so) but I’m pretty sure that nothing stood out negatively.

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: Ohio State, waiting on 8 other schools

General comments: If you get a chance to apply for a travel grant to Discover Wellesley Weekend, do it! You have to apply (not that intense, kind of like a mini college app) and if you get a travel grant, they will fly you out to Wellesley and pay for the flight! Reflection
Strengths: Passion/Focus! I’m definitely interested in reading/writing/English
Weaknesses: Why Wellesley was lackluster. I found that I just couldn’t find anything that I really connected with. SAT score, too many college courses taken concurrently, lack of leadership
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Fit? I figured out sort of late that I couldn’t see myself there but applied anyways because it was free. Also, I have a lot of college classes on my HS transcript (to graduate and b/c it’s expensive to send CC transcripts)
