Wellesley vs. Newhouse at Syracuse

I have received acceptance into both schools and am so confused as to what to do. I don't definitely know if I want to be in communications or not, which is why I'm hesitant to go to Newhouse. It is definitely a possibility and an interest, but I just feel that if I get there and then decide it's not what I want to do, I'm out of luck and will have to transfer, which I DON'T want to do. As for Wellesley, I really like the campus and academics but the fact that it is an all-girls school is sort of unfavorable. I wanted a more holistic college experience... studies, social life, friends... but I'm not huge into the social scene, so I thought maybe Wellesley would be for me. It just seems crazy studious and serious.

Anyone have any advice? Gone to either of these schools?

Thanks

Wellesley is crazy studious and serious. But for the right student, it is a perfect choice.

Do you like Syracuse well enough to transfer into a different department if you decide you don’t want communications? If you are only interested in Syracuse because of that one program, you may want to look at your list of college acceptances again.

I know, I’ve been thinking the same thing. I mean I like the school, but outside of Newhouse it’s nothing compared to Wellesley or, as a matter of fact, most of the other schools I got into. It’s a very tough decision, and I still have no idea what to do! Anyone else have info or advice?

Have you visited the Wellesley forum here on CC? You could get more insight that could help you decide whether you’d like to attend Wellesley.

hmm not really, I’ve seen a few things but I feel like it’s mostly kids who haven’t applied yet asking about admissions. I’ll try it though, thanks

CHOOSE NEWHOUSE! this is a no-brainer. At syracuse you will get the full college experience but Newhouse is so prestigious and so selective and has many opportunities and connections in the job market.

Ahh I’m so conflicted! I’m leaning toward Wellesley because of its location near boston which is a better college area. And also I’m just not sure if I want to major in communications. Also, Syracuse has a really good theater dept but only those who are majoring in it can participate, and usually then not even until their junior year. I want to participate in theater too, and while Wellesley’s isn’t the best it’s better than nothing…right?

What are your other choices? It sounds like both of these have serious downsides for you.

Being at Wellesley is not like being at a coed school, but on the other hand, it’s not a convent. Many students there enjoy the fact that they can take the shuttle to parties at MIT and then come home to a quiet campus.

My other main choices that i’m considering besides these are Tulane University and University of Delaware, both the honors programs. They’re both good financially, but rather far away and I just got my finaid from wellesley and it’s really good.

“I just got my finaid from wellesley and it’s really good.”

Then I would say you are done. Go to Wellesley and don’t look back!

I wouldn’t pay a fortune for Syracuse. Since you’re considering a potentially low-paying career, you might not want to burden yourself with debt. Overall, Wellesley is the more respected name. But frankly, you have great choices and you can’t really go wrong.

akeegan - Full disclosure, I am a Tulane alum and now a Tulane Dad. So guess what, I am going to talk about Tulane! LOL. Wellesley is a seriously good school, and Boston a great city. But I can understand that you are not thrilled about an all female school. My D wouldn’t even look at them. She is in the Honors Program at Tulane, and she is extremely happy there. She got into higher rated schools, including some top 15’s, but got full tuition at Tulane. That’s hard to pass up of course. If she had gotten the same from WUSTL, for example, she might have chosen it, but she also loved New Orleans, so hard to say. Between the honors dorm, the couple of honors classes, and the fact that she was able to place out of tons of stuff because of her AP’s and go to the higher level courses, she has been challenged and very satisfied with the academics. If you are in a similar situation you might have the same experience.

Tulane has a good theater department and programs, but it is not restricted I don’t believe. They may favor their students in the major, that would be normal I suppose. But I am sure they welcome and need students from all areas that want to participate.

OK, that’s my pitch for now. Just to give you more info in case that helps. If you have questions you can ask me here or PM me if you want. Happy to help.
