Hey everyone! I was at Wesfest last weekend and it was amazing! But I've now decided to look into wellness housing XD

I don't have a problem with what other people do etc, but my entire family has asthma so any sort of smoke: bad and I'm not much of a drinker.

What do some current students have to say? Will i be stuck with the nuns if i sign up for wellness? Are people on the wellness floors pretty much like everyone else with the exception of drugs/ alcohol?

Also, are there some dorms in general where people tend to stay away from that stuff? I hear the Nics are pretty straight edge.

I don’t really see why it’s necessary unless you specifically want to ensure that you’ll meet and live with people who do not smoke/drink. you’ll meet people like you anywhere you live, but I suppose it’d be easier to avoid being around drugs/alcohol if you live in mixed-year housing (the butts or the nics). the all-frosh dorms tend to be more in-your-face about partying. being around smoke isn’t a particular problem anywhere (except maybe westco…). I’ve met people in every dorm that abstain from drugs and alcohol.

I think the sub-free floor was in the butts this year, but it may also be in the nics. I can’t vouch for what kind of people live there.

@jarsilver: Thanks for responding! The reason I’m asking is because when i was at Wesfest i went into both Fauver and Westco and there were parties happening in several rooms. That’s pretty cool and i even joined some of them, but i just don’t want to be the person who’s room is right next to the party and have to leave my own room just to get some studying done. I figure that it’s a much better situation when you can go join that sort of atmosphere, as opposed to not being able to get away from it. Ya dig?

If you want something similar but not totally like that there is an all girls floor which from what I have gathered from a girl who lives there is quiet, clean, and doesn’t smell bad.

Ju_liaa, I am in a similar situation… while social, I am not planning on drinking much or smoking in college. I also don’t really want to have roommates who party so much that I can’t sleep or have them puking on my doorstep. I considered the sub-free floor, but I don’t really want to be in the Butts, since they are so far away and seemed relatively depressing (jmo). Like mccalm mention, I’ve decided that if I go to Wes I am going to be on the all-girls hall in the Nics. It really just is one hall surrounded by all coed halls, so it’s not like you’re only going to be around girls. It just smelled better and the girls on the hall seemed like less of the party sort. That’s what my host recommended and it looks like it’ll work out.

It’s a tough call. I was straight-edge when I got to Wes, (though honestly I started drinking sophomore year when I realized I could do it in a fun, responsible way), and a fair number of my friends were, too. I actually met someone at Wesfest who I really liked, and we decided to request each other as roommates freshman year, so we knew we wouldn’t have to worry about being stuck with someone who wants to smoke pot in the room or something. We lived on a hall in Fauver that was very party-y, though it didn’t bother us that much, because the really loud days were pretty much confined to weekends when we didn’t need to get up early or anything anyway (and here, few people study on a Friday/Saturday night unless absolutely necessary). Honestly, we didn’t wind up socializing that much with the people on our floor (though most of them got pretty close), but started hanging out with a group of students from all different parts of Fauver and WestCo who were a little less the hardcore partying type.

I graduated last year and I’m still friends with most of those same people today. I’m even rooming with two of them in NYC now.

I don’t know if that helps answer your question… I feel like people always say “Don’t worry, you’ll find your scene” but in the abstract it kind of sounds phony. So I wanted to give an example of how I found my scene. I don’t know what it would have been like if I hadn’t requested a roommate who I knew I would like and who wouldn’t smoke in the room. However, since being at Wes, I realized that pretty much anyone who smoked would be respectful enough to not smoke in the room if you requested it. (And in the rare situation that your roommate is a TOTAL ******, you can always transfer roommates.)

It’s a little bit random where people wind up clustering. I was friends with a lot of people in WestCo 2 freshman year who didn’t drink or do drugs, but obviously it was completely random that they ended up in WestCo 2 and not 1 or 3 or 4. I only knew one person on the wellness floor, and he basically spent his time hanging out with other people elsewhere and just went back there to sleep. Then again, it was in an isolated section of the Butts that year.

Oh, one more thing… I wouldn’t take the level of partying happening during WesFest as representative of the level of partying during the whole year. It’s like a big festival/party for the students (esp. 1st and 2nd year students), too.

squeti: That sounds like a good idea. But in lieu of that i might write on the housing form that I’d like to live in the Nics because the students informed me that it is generally quieter than other dorms. Hopefully they’ll take it into account!
