Our high school had both their nominees offered the Wells this year (crazy!). Only one took it, the other went to Harvard. The were top 5 kids of about 700+ in an excellent but public school. Of course both National Merit Scholars. They were VERY VERY VERY “well rounded” as well. Academics are assumed, the other stuff is very important. The other person I know who got it was my niece…way back when. It’s only 20 ish kids per year (or exactly 20?), so HIGHLY competitive. My neice was #3 of about 800+ kids. Her school wasn’t that great. What I know about these 3 kids is that they’re extremely accomplished outside of the classroom. Good news…lots of kids who make finalist but don’t get the Wells…DO then get the Presidential instead…it’s also a great scholarship. BEST LUCK to all !!!

I’m applying but don’t know what chance i’ve got…

GPA: 3.86 uw (not good…stupid french)
Courses: 3 AP’s, an honors, and 3 college courses through local cc
Test Scores:
SAT: 2080
ACT: 32 (tell me if this is looking creepy)
AP’s: 5 on AP US and Euro, 4 on Lang

EC’s: Football (two state championships), Optimist Club (founded my clup and too much else to write leading to International board member), Key club, NHS, Peer ministry and other school clubs and services things.

I feel like my gpa will keep me from getting considered and I’ve got to write some other stuff to even get my name out cause my school isn’t a “selected” out of state school to recomend. I’m actually working on that right now.

haha woah thats crazy how close our stats are. well i just gotta do like 3 or 4 essays, one of them is longer than the others, like 800 words or so. and a guidance thing, and a recommendation letter or something.

This is beyond creepy lol. I’m probably going to dual degree in finance and political science! Don’t tell me you’re considering marketing too lol

Look at it this way, you also have the chance for becoming one of the 10 Kelley scholars. Furthermore, it appears that it is easier to become a Kelley Scholar than a Wells Scholar for 2010. Thus, a little more competition should not be too bad.
