I had a 1990(700,700,590) on my SAT, and a B+/A- average at a private school, with a solid essay, and great extra curriculars, along with SAT 2s in the high 600s and low 700s, and I was positively shocked that I was waitlisted, considering I am out-of-state.

Sorry to hear that, metsfan1rar. Not sure what you mean by "considering I am out-of-state" but I do know that it is EXTREMELY COMPETETIVE to get into w&m for out of state applicants. Will you stay on the waitlist or do you know where you'll go? Good luck!

Is shocked the term you meant to use? I'm surprised you weren't rejected. No offense.

"shocked, considering I am out of state"

meaning you were expecting rejection?

yeah i agree with the above statements no offense bro

umm, i had a 2110 out of state, great gpa, and good extra curriculars and was surprised and thrilled to get in! It is by no means easy for out of staters to get into W and M.

4.5 GPA. WL. Not surprised. VA schools are just like that. Then again, UVA next year, but THAT surprised me.

wow, im shocked you didn't gret in hazelorb... im guessing you are a girl, which is tougher. Way more girls apply than guys. In state guys have it easiest, then in state girls, then out of state guys, and finally, you have it the hardest.

Yes, my d. had 2120 and 4.3 and was not surprised to be waitlisted; thought that was about how it would be though would not have been surprised to be rejected. I guess getting off the waitlist is virtually impossible???

they took a fair amount (over 100, I believe) off the waitlist last year

Out-of-state is nearly impossible to get in. Two-thirds are reserved for in-state, and they're pushing to increase enrollment of international students. East-coast states seem to be highly favored, too. I would say the 590 combined with the subject test scores in the 600s probably influenced their decision. Keep trying, though: when I was in the admissions office, there was a poster on the wall saying something like this...

Do you think we were most impressed by Jon Stewart's:
1. GPA
2. Extracurriculars
3. Wit during an admissions interview
At W&M, we realize you're more than just paper stats.

I probably didn't get it exactly right, but show them you're someone they want. After all, if somebody's got to get in off the waitlist, it might as well be you, right?

So, do you think it is NOT too late to write a letter and say that "I really want to come to w and m and I very much hope you can take me off the wait list?" Of course, it would be better if one could show some new awards, etc. but if not,w ould you write a letter of appeal?

Go ahead and send a letter expressing interest. I didn't send one last year to my top choice school (which had waitlisted me) until early may.

Our student sent a letter right after getting the wait list news. She highlighted things from her overnight and specific reasons why she felt W & M was a better fit over the other schools she was admitted to. She was eventually accepted to W & M.

Blue Jay: Did your daughter get off the wait list? Is it too late to arrange an overnight? Is it too late to arrange a visit. We did not do either of those things before. Would that track that if we arranged it now? We did not officially visit because we had been to the campus as tourists and knew about w and m from acquaintances and it was late in app process so we figured we would visit if she got in which seemed remove. With a 3.7 uw, 4.3 weighted, 1410.2100 on sats, do you all think she may well be taken off weight list or is it remote?

Yes, she did get off the waitlist and is a very happy at W & M. Did your daughter contact the school at all since the waitlist letter? I would most definitely call and/or send a letter expressing her sincere interest. It wouldn't hurt to mention your previous visits and contacts with acquaintances that helped to shape her view of the school. The problem with an overnight now is that classes will be over at the end of next week. Our daughter's SAT was 1430 with a 95% unweighted GPA. All 700's on 3 SAT subject test. Most students applying have numbers in that range so other factors are key. Good luck.

Based on stats alone, I am not really at the same caliber as some of the applicants on this board, but I am honored to have been admitted out-of-state and will most likely be attending next year. For reference: 1410 SAT, 94% UW GPA, Male

Yea 3 of us girls in my Calc BC class applied - 2 WL 1 rejection. OOS... But we're all going to good schools so it's okay. =) Congrats to all those who got in!

I was pretty shocked to be waitlisted out of state: I had a 3.95, 2240, 760/720 SAT IIs, very strong extracurrics, and sibling legacy. But, that's the nature of the game. Luckily W&M was not my first choice. I hope you had better luck at other schools.
