were any out-of-state applicants positively shocked to be waitlisted

i got in out-of-state...although i don't have nearly as strong SATs as a lot of people replying to the thread, but pretty good grades and excellent extra curriculars, and i would say strong writing...perhaps, they didn't feel that you didn't show your personality through your writing and optional statement. I'm only guessing this, as I don't know what you wrote or what type of person you are, but like a lot of people were saying, in these days, it's more important to be well-rounded and have personality than to be book-smart and dull. Perhaps, they didn't feel that you exhibited leadership. It's one thing to be in a lot of clubs, but another to lead some clubs. Maybe, they didn't feel that you contributed to the community through service. These are all of the reasons I can think of that could possibly explain your waitlisted status. I hope that didn't sound like I was putting you down, because that was definitely not my intention. The college admissions process is such a game, that overqualified students slip through the cracks and some underqualified ones take those people's spots.
