It seems like a lot of people were either deferred or denied from engineering. Why do you think this is? What were your stats as well?

I was deferred from Computer Engineering. My stats are:

Instate. Male. First generation to go to college in my family. Parents were both born outside of the country.

GPA: 3.67/4.0 UW
Class rank: 22/883, top 2.5%
ACT scores:
Composite: 33
Math: 36
Science: 35
Reading: 30
English: 31

And I also have a job which takes up 15-20 hours per week, along with 250 hours of community service (4 per week).

My course load is very rigorous too (Took 8 AP classes, along with all other possible honors academic classes. All AP classes for my senior schedule).

I’m starting to think that it was my poor essay (I even found a grammar mistake or two). Would that possibly sway my chances by much? I really wish I could go back in time and spend much more time on the essay.

I was deferred from Chemical Engineering. My stats are:

GPA: 3.53/4.0UW (Very Strong Upward Trend)
ACT:
Composite: 33
Math: 33
Science: 35
English:34
Reading: 33

EC’s were pretty average maybe slightly below average. Played for hockey team for 4 years, have a successful youtube channel, done about 100 hours of volunteer work.

Hooks: URM, Instate, discussed parental divorce
Essays: Average to above average

I think I was deferred due to about 50 kids in my school who are using UIUC as their safety and filled our High School’s quota for students. Hopefully some will reply and open some space.

Engineering defers a high percentage of applicants because it likes to make the majority of decisions after seeing the entire pool of applicants. It also has a higher percentage of denials than any college other than business, but most denied for engineering are admitted to the university. This has been becoming more and more the case with engineering in the last 4 to 5 years, during which time the number of applicants to engineering has more than doubled and keeps going up 12% to 18% a year despite annual expectations that it will normalize. Unfortunately for many, the result has been that the engineering admission rate during that same time has fallen from about 68% to around 50%, and could go lower than that this year. The other colleges in the university have also had some percentage increases in applications during the same time but the annual percentage increases have been in the low single digits as expected. And contrary to the belief of some, there are no high school quotas.

Many people are telling me that deferment is almost a guaranteed denial and I am beginning to panic. It has been my dream school and everyone kept telling me I would make it in easily which caused me to slack off a little on the essays. I’ve tried so hard to keep my stats up (posted above) and I wish there was some way to increase my chances of acceptance in February. However, from what I understand, there is nothing I can do other than hope and wait until then. My interest for the major remains unchanged so luckily, this is a wake up call to try my hardest at finding another college so I can pursue my dreams.

“Many people” are wrong. Over half of those deferred are eventually accepted.
