Wes and Calculus

Since I’m very interested in Wesleyan, I was reading “The Gatekeepers” - though it’s pretty old, I think the general process is still similar. In the book, they said they look for three “markers” in applicants: all 4 years of a foreign language, classes in the three core sciences, and math up to calculus. Cue concern, because I only have 2 of the 3 - next year (12th grade) I’ll be taking honors precalc, not AP calc.

Looking at their site, they say ~15% of each incoming class hasn’t taken calc in high school, but I don’t really like those odds, especially when you think about all the high schools that don’t offer calc at all (obviously applicants from those schools can’t be penalized for not taking it). So . . . assuming I’m not going into STEM (and my ECs and whatnot clearly show that) is not having calculus enough to get your application immediately tossed? If there are any current Wes students on this board, did you or anyone you know not take calc in HS (in a HS that offered it)?

Can’t help you with an answer, but I have the same question. D is taking AP Stats senior year instead of Calc, in part because it’s more applicable for her non-STEM major. I hate those odds too.

Well, at least I’m not alone any more! But yeah, the 15% is weird - I don’t think I’ve seen any other college give exact percents for students who had particular classes, though the criteria is probably the same.

My Son is a senior now (and loved every minute at Wes). He had 4 years of a language and 4 years of science in HS, but did not make it to Calc in High School (because he started HS with algebra so ended with precalc). We DID worry about this but he was accepted and I later came to think (after talking some of his friends) that 2 out of 3 is not uncommon; however I really never did a survey so can’t say for sure. My gut says if you have two out of three covered and demonstrate otherwise you I are fine in math such as with you existing math grades and/or standardized scores (my S scored in the low 700s in his math SAT, lower than his other scores but obviously good) that helps too.

My DD was accepted this year. She did not take Calculus, only did math up through pre-Calc. She did however score >700 on Math SAT. I think they look at your overall academic program, if you don’t take Calc senior year, but rather take another AP level class in its place, imho… I do not think it will matter, especially if you indicate you are more of a humanities or social sciences person…

Thanks, everybody! I got a 680 on the math SAT, so . . . almost there. I’ll be sure to do well in precalc next year, and hopefully the lack of calc won’t result in immediate application-to-garbage-bin action.

Belated note but hope this will ease you. My S is a freshman at Wes and he took only up to precalc at high school. He is studying “Introductory Calculus” at Wes now to major in CS or/and Physics at Wes. So don’t worry too much but better to get SAT over 700 on the math.
