Wesleyan Class of 2019 RD Discussion Thread

Did you all get a notification in your email today, or did you login into the portal?

I got an email saying my application status was updated ^^^

Yes, my email seemed to insinuate that they were going to release in “batches” so there is still hope!

Accepted yesterday as well!
Didn’t send SAT if anyone was curious.

@Caguama‌ Congrats! I’m curious why you didn’t send them because I see you scored high enough to get a likely letter to Williams. (Congrats again) Did you send ACTs? or no scores at all as a test?

@SoapyMango Actually…I didn’t score that high, and I resat 3 times :neutral_face: . I’ll explain my story later when all the acceptance and rejections come in. I suppose I’ll be the “You don’t need a 2400” poster child for this year. I was nervous my score wasn’t great, considering the plethora of 2200+ you see on CC all day. I also had another examination score (Something like A Levels) so I used those instead.

^Congratulations. So happy for you all.

Accepted ^-^

Very curious about the stats of accepted students. My son hasn’t heard anything; he’s a double legacy, and had (what I thought) were very good stats and ECs. Anyone willing to post? Also, does the decision pop up on the same page as the application status (can’t remember the name). We didn’t see anything there except the fact that his application is complete.

@Awesomekidsmom‌

I’m baffled by the fact that Wesleyan has admitted some students early. In my opinion this only further perpetuates the division of students at elite institutions. So some students are worthy of hearing earlier than other students? Why? I doubt it is because of their academic merit rather it is based on if they can pay. As Wesleyan is no longer need blind, I imagine that students with more financial need have a strike against them and are pushed to the back of the line.

Smith, Mount Holyoke, Kenyon etc. are also need-aware and send early writes. Hamilton until recently was need-aware and sent early writes. Are you also accusing them of economic discrimination?

Fwiw- I’ve known dozens of students who received early writes to Smith and Mount Holyoke. Without exception the student’s test scores, GPA, class rank, etc. were in top 5%+/- of the applicants. Ability to pay was a non-issue. The majority received significant financial aid. Wesleyan is no different.

@‌CrewDad

I categorically disagree with this concept of what you refer to as early writes. What is the point? It sets up a division of students from the get go. Until I hear from a representative from the schools that you mention that the ability to pay has absolutely no bearing on their decision, I will wonder. If an institution is not need-blind then finances of a prospective student may possibly be considered.

Done.

Only after ~95% of the applicants are admitted is a determination made if it’s necessary to admit the remaining 5% need-aware. Obviously, early writes were sent months earlier. Long before need may become an issue in admissions.

No college is actually need-blind. Amherst has a concerted effort to recruit low-income students. That’s need-aware admissions! Amherst also sends early writes. I’ve never heard anyone complain that Amherst ‘perpetuates the division of students.’ :wink:

@CrewDad.

I’m out. Clearly, based on the amount of posts you have, you have time to spare with this online stuff.

Good luck to all of the Wesleyan applicants, need-based and otherwise.

@mamaxtres‌

My best friend got her acceptance on the 13th. She is as dirt poor as I am but she got her response and I am still waiting for mine…I doubt that the batches are sent out based on financial need.

However, if the argument could be made that batches are sent out based on academic merit, I will say that her essays, recs, rank, and GPA were all great.

There’s no need to be salty about any of this. Her stats and mine are nearly the same but I’m still waiting for my letter. Don’t negatively conspire because unless you’re on the inside, no one really knows if there’s a method to these batches or not.

Son was just accepted early. He applied for FA so there is at least one data point for ya. We aren’t sure if the FA offered will work though. It is Not as much as we had hoped.

He has good stats–35 ACT, National merit, 4.0 gpa, A’s
in college math and physics class , strong recs and lab work.

We live in Iowa and he did not get early admit to Grinnell. I wonder if geographical diversity helped for Wes and worked against him for Grinnell.

@mamaxtres–I also wonder about the reasoning behind early admit. We all felt a bit let down when son did not receive one from Grinnell when we heard about other students receiving them. Perhaps it does increase yield ?
