Wesleyan Class of 2019 RD results thread

Now that the first batch of RD Acceptance letters have been sent (and borrowing from another thread), it would be great if we could all share our stats. This could really help prospective students.
Good luck!

Honestly I am very surprised to be accepted, and to be accepted early.

Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]
[] ACT: 33 (34E 34M 31R 32S 10W)
[
] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.95
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 8 out of 165
[
] Senior Year Course Load: (PSEO) Sem 1- Statistics, College Composition, German 1, Drawing 1, Techniques of Acting | Sem 2 - Physics, Psychology, Playwriting for Stage and Screen, College Composition 2, Techniques of Acting 2
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Most of High School: Community Foundation Youth Fund (President), Junior Statesmen of America (President), Art Society (Secretary) | Two Years of High School or Less: LGBT Club (Co-Founder, this is a work in progress still) Community Foundation Board of Directors, Piano, Academic Challenge, Theater (HS doesn’t have consistent drama program so unfortunately I could only participate one year), Swim Team
[
] Job/Work Experience: Elementary School Tutor (10th grade only)
[] Volunteer/Community service: Community Foundation, not mentioned on app but I volunteer every summer for my church’s food booth at the county fair
[
] Summer Activities: food booth, also not mentioned on app but I help sell my mom’s jewelry at art shows.
[] Essays: Fairly solid, Common App was about how the Mandelbrot set inspired me to study mathematics, Wes Essay “collaboration or conversation” was about LGBT club I’m creating for my HS
[
] Teacher Recommendation: solid, my English Teacher from Junior year LOVES me, my Calc professor as well
[] Counselor Rec: I assume good
[/ul]Other[ul]
[
] Applied for Financial Aid? Yes
[] Intended Major: Mathematics
[
] State (if domestic applicant): Ohio
[] School Type: Public
[
] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Male
[
] Income Bracket: Upper class
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: The fact that I took Calculus 1&2 at a college my junior year and got a B and A respectively (that being my only B in HS), being the co-founder of an LGBT club, on the board of one of the most respected philanthropic organizations in my region. I submitted an art portfolio, demonstrated that I didn’t take 4 years of art for nothing.
[
] Weaknesses: I was worried how my PSEO courses would be viewed compared to AP classes (HS offers no AP courses). My common app was a bit of a mess, as can be my life. My ECs looked very inconsistent on paper and they only look good now because I’m cleaning them up due to hindsight. My course history is fairly jumbled as well.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: see “strengths”, I live in the middle of nowhere so I feel kinda inadequate next to some others on this site but in a way that just meant I had search deeply to find ways to put my talents to use and give back to my community, which helped me grow. I also have a clear, unrelenting, burning passion to study mathematics.
[
] Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected/waiting on: Waitlisted: Lafayette College
Deferred to RD: Princeton
Waiting on: Cornell, Brown, Princeton
[/ul]General Comments:
I’m thankful Wesleyan saw the potential in me which I see. I’m amazed to have made it this far. I was very ambitious in the colleges I applied to and have been worried sick that I wouldn’t make it into a single one. While touring the campus I felt such an intense sense of belonging there; there’s a possibility I might even want to choose them over an ivy.

[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit Finalist, 1st place at Regional Science Olympiad, 2nd place at Regional Algebra II competition, 3rd place at Regional Geometry Competition
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[
] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Flute (1st chair, 4th chair), Dance Marathon (Publicity Committee Junior Head, Senior Head), Art and Writing Club (Writing Committee Head), Winter Guard, Science Club, AP Biology TA, KWave (kpop dance group), Bhangra (Indian dance group)
[] Job/Work Experience: None
[
] Volunteer/Community service: 60 hours at food bank, 40 hours at high school marching band camp
[] Summer Activities: Summer research program at Duke
[
] Essays: Common App was about winterguard, supplement was about a Rosie the Riveter photo set and feminism. They were probably pretty solid if they got me into college!
[] Teacher Recommendation: Probably decent. I TA for my AP Biology teacher, so we’re pretty friendly and close, and I was pretty lively in the class that I took with my English teacher.
[
] Counselor Rec: Probably very impersonal. I haven’t gotten to know my counselor that well.
[] Additional Rec: None
[
] Interview: None
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
[
] Intended Major: Computer Science/Biology
[] State (if domestic applicant): NC
[
] School Type: Top residential high school
[] Ethnicity: Chinese
[
] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: $80,000-$100,000
[
] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None. In fact, I have the antihook of being an ORM.
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Those essays were probably my best ones. I also come from a small town, but in my sophomore year, I applied to the top high school in my state, so that displayed determination.
[
] Weaknesses: Not enough meaningful leadership positions or summer activities, could’ve had bigger major awards. My grades have also been dipping a bit. Also, my ethnicity and the fact that I didn’t know my counselor that well.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My essays. The six colleges I heard back from before Wesleyan were all rejections, and I have a feeling it was because my essays weren’t great, and because my scores were a better match for Wesleyan. Also my views on feminism.
[
] Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected/waiting on:
Rejected: Rice, Duke, WUSTL, MIT, Emory, Harvey Mudd, Swarthmore
Accepted: UNC, Arizona State
[/ul]General Comments: Wesleyan is one of my top choices. Even if I don’t end attending Wesleyan because of financial reasons, I’ll always remember the moment of my first acceptance, after being rejected by every single one of the six schools I’d heard back from before Wesleyan. I went into my decision letter, sure that I was going to be rejected again, only to see the words “Congratulations!” (Although next time, when I apply for graduate school, I’m definitely going to apply to a lot more matches/safeties)

Decision: Accepted

[
] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): first gen. college abroad

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: my extracurriculars and Wesleyan supplement. I thought they linked together very well.
[
] Weaknesses: GPA and standardized testing scores. GPA average was pretty low compared to senior year 3.86 when I studied much harder.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: honestly I don’t know. I wasn’t expecting an acceptance, more like a waitlist.
[
] Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected/waiting on:
Accepted: Occidental, Wake Forest, Emory, Franklin & Marshall, Boston U, Drexel, Brandeis, UC Irvine
Rejected: Claremont McKenna, Duke, WUSTL, UCLA, UC Berkeley
Waiting: Brown
[/ul]General Comments: never visited the school, nor connecticut. really wanna know how the vibes around the city are. not exactly my top choice, and i actually applied last minute. but i’m still quite glad i got in!

] Volunteer/Community service: lots of water stops every year at races (Breast Cancer 5k/half marathon, etc)
[] Summer Activities: week-long creative writing course at local private college, summer training for cross county
[
] Essays: Not gonna lie, pretty damn good. I’m a good writer, it’s my main strong point. I wrote it the main essay about how I’ve always been a reader and a writer and that’s how I learned about the world and whatnot. it sounds better (though maybe still as “Girl In Your MFA” pretentious?) in person. And my supplement was very good and creative I think, I did the “interesting conversation” one about like rambling 2am conversations on my best friend’s bedroom floor
[] Teacher Recommendation: pretty good i think? I mean we’re not allowed to read them but like I’m pretty sure they were good. I have a really close relationship with one teacher, she’s my english teacher and was my creative writing teacher, and runs the literary magazine, and the other two really like me I think.
[

[] School Type: public

[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): not a racial minority or anything but a religious minority I guess since I’m Wiccan
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[
] Strengths: Really strong writer, very high grades in all humanities classes, high SAT, good recs good essays
[] Weaknesses: lower math SAT, lower math and science grades (mid-low 90s as opposed to high 90s for humanities), not much community service.
[
] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: beats me? I wrote them this looooong letter the day before admissions about how much I love the school and don’t want to go anywhere else. but I honestly think it was my supplement. plus I had such a good feeling when i visited that I feel like the universe like cosmically wanted me to go to wes.

Reflection
Strengths: my extracurriculars and test scores.
Weaknesses: GPA- 3.8 hardly cuts it these days, although 4.0 first semester senior. No hooks.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Besides having the test scores, I’m just look like a Wesleyan kind of person and strong in science and the arts. Great in-person interview and attended local alumni sponsored event where after speaking to an alumnus told admissions person I was a fit…
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected/waiting on:
Accepted: Oberlin, Macalester, Grinnell, Bard, Lewis& Clark (all with merit scholarships of $14-19K per year),
Accepted with no merit money: Wes, Barnard, UCSD, UCSB
Waitlisted: Vassar, Columbia
Rejected: Brown, Northwestern, UC-Berkeley

Comments: Deciding between Wes and Barnard- very different schools! No merit money for either but parents willing to foot most of the bill if I can demonstrate the return on investment is better. Wes was “first love” but Brown turned my head.
