Wesleyan or NYU

Hi,
I have been accepted into NYU and Wesleyan University in Middletown Connecticut. I intend to study economics. I like Wesleyan more in terms of the campus and the student body and the flexibility to design my own program. But there’s no experience like New York in terms of Work ex and internships right? But at NYU I have been offered a place in the Liberal Studies Core Program and I’m not too keen on it. But I have been told I can easily transfer to CAS at the end of the second year. Financially, I am able to afford both colleges. I have also gotten into BU and College of William and Mary. A few questions that I had were

  1. Any inputs on the Liberal Studies Core Program at NYU?
  2. How would studying economics at CAS be different from studying it at Wesleyan?
  3. I am a little confused with the concept of Liberal Arts Colleges, how do my four years at an LAC differ from those at a ‘regular’ school like NYU?
  4. Should I be considering BU and College of William and Mary versus NYU and Wesleyan?
  5. Lastly, which school do you reckon I should choose and why?

Thanks in advance

  1. I haven’t looked into this 2 yr sort of mysterious program that much
2 & 3) you should work that out for yourself, compare the major requirements and the general graduation requirements.
  2. LAC are most the same but they usually don’t have grad departments and engineering schools. However Wes does offer grad degrees in some areas. LAC usually have smaller classes rather than massive intro classes.
  3. I would also consider Wm Mary, it has an excellent reputation.
  4. I would proab pick Wesleyan. It is a unique colleges with a lot of strengths you can take advantage of easily without red tape or cross registering or transferring to another school within the university. It will be more flexible as far as what you want to do. , and closer relationships with faculty because of the scale. The transition to a highly selective college can be bumpy the first year. There will be personal attention and support should you need it. You can intern in NY in summer.

Congrats on a nice set of acceptances.

  1. Any inputs on the Liberal Studies Core Program at NYU?
-It’s considered the easiest college to get into at NYU. Apparently, the faculty isn’t very impressive. Classes are small. But you do get to study at CAS after sophomore year. And students at LSP are still usually very well above average in terms of academic preparation and dedication, but in general probably not as much as the the other students at CAS and Stern, for example.
  2. How would studying economics at CAS be different from studying it at Wesleyan?
I’m not familiar with economics at either, but you can probably focus more on your major at Wesleyan since you’ll have to fulfill the LSP core for your first two years at NYU and won’t be able to take many (if any) classes at CAS.
  3. I am a little confused with the concept of Liberal Arts Colleges, how do my four years at an LAC differ from those at a ‘regular’ school like NYU?
LACs are usually smaller and faculty is usually focused on undergraduates and therefore you probably won’t have TAs teaching you, which does happen at NYU. Wesleyan is much smaller than NYU as well.
  4. Should I be considering BU and College of William and Mary versus NYU and Wesleyan?
    I don’t think so.
  5. Lastly, which school do you reckon I should choose and why?
Probably Wesleyan. It is the more prestigious school, and you got into your program of choice. Also, you don’t seem very excited about living in NYC, which is a huge part of NYU. But you do seem to love Wesleyan, so that’s really important. Wesleyan is a really politically active college, with very outspoken and liberal students. I believe it will be an experience like no other.
