Wesleyan, quite a few inquiries :)

How hard are admissions in reality?
What's the school environment like?
How difficult are the classes?
How much is the workload?
What's the student body like?
How's the social aspect of things?
Are the dorms nice?
Is the food good?

For the completely unhooked candidate with borderline stats, it can be quite difficult. Look at the Wesleyan Class of 2015 thread and you will find moe than one 800 SATI and II scorer denied admission.

Wesleyan is like a hybrid between Swarthmore and Brown; it’s a regular LAC in a small city/large New England town; there is a definite bubble-like atmosphere. However, below the campus lies a city grid consisting of small bungalows and more than a few municipal insitutions like schools, senior citizens homes and some fairly circumspect public housing. The local constabulary runs a tight ship. If you venture as far as Main Street you will discover a rather attractive shopping district consisting mostly of mom-and-pop stores and family-run restaurants, the most famous of which is O’Rourke’s diner.

Getting A’s consistently can be difficult. The administration discourages gut courses and even the art programs can be intimidating. However, with help from the online course book “WesMaps”, you can plot a regimen that suits you. The trick is in picking courses that appeal to you on some level so that it feels good working so hard.

It varies to taste. Sciences require the most work outside of class; some people never cease talking shop; some people start blowing off steam as early as Wednesday.

Someone on the Amherst forum said, Wesleyan was “polarized” between “regular preppies” jocks, and hipsters. I think it is more subtle than that. There are lots of different people at Wesleyan, no one group rules the roost and that seems to suit everybody.

Despite the above, almost everyone seems to be a musician of some sort. There a lot of a capella groups. And, don’t come to Wesleyan unless you like movies, especially American ones.

The dorms are okay; the newly built/renovated ones are nice; the older ones are comfortable and suitable for socializing. After sophomore year most people begin looking for university-owned houses in the immediate neighborhood.

The dining hall service provider is Bon Apetit and gets high grades in the food department. Wesleyan’s food service workers and their student supporters don’t always agree that that its the best employer.

Wow, this is great information! Thank you so much! I really appreciate your time.

JohnWesley, as usual, you rock when it comes to Wes!

gosh, I can’t believe how long I’ve been at this. I feel like Santa Claus during Christmas rush!

Much appreciated, though  What do you think of their psychology program?

psychology is a popular major with some very gifted teachers and researchers in the field. Someone is always calling for volunteers for experiments. It’s reputation is that it leans toward the social and cultural end rather than the cognitive end, but that there is also some overlap with behavioral neuroscience (the neuroscience department has a fantastic reputation.) You may want to ask the same question on the Wesleyan CC forum.
