Wesleyan "type" schools

I would like some suggestions on schools similar to Wesleyan in feel, size, academic rigor, but that might be a little easier to get into. Thanks (Northeast preferably).

Connecticut College, Barnard, (if you’re a woman), Bates, and, Skidmore are often mentioned.

There are a lot of liberal arts schools along the eastern seaboard. Just liimit your searches to LACs in new england and New York. There are too many to list for you.

Oberlin (OH), Skidmore (NY)

Oberlin is very midwest. Not comparable to the northeast elite in any way.

I haven’t seen Oberlin myself but for my nephew who is at Wes, Oberlin was by far his second choice – he felt it was the school that had the most similar vibe and character to Wes. Again, I don’t have any first hand opinions. If the OP wants a Northeast school, it obviously isn’t a fit, but it seemed worth throwing out there.

There is in fact very little to separate Oberlin and Wesleyan, neither of which belongs to any sort of regional “elite,” whatever that means; not that they’re not amazing schools, because they are, but neither can be described as elitist or catering to the status-driven. Some people just like to make incredibly nonsensical and ignorant statements on these boards sometimes (“very Midwest” for example).

Oberlin and Wesleyan are absolutely similar. Informative is known for being anything but.

Thanks for the replies. However, I do think Oberlin is as hard to get into as Wesleyan, at least from my daughter’s school.

^I was just going to say that. Oberlin is about as difficult as Wesleyan to be admitted. Skidmore has lower GPA and scores avg. of accepted students than Oberlin and Wesleyan. It’s still not easy to be admitted to Skidmore though. It may be worth applying ED depending on the strengths of other aspects within your application (make sure you can afford it! Obviously do the numbers before ever applying ED). Skidmore has a 41% admit rate regular round, but 71% acceptance rate Early Decision round! Also, look at Beloit, Earlham, Hampshire, Warren Wilson. Skidmore is highest ranked of these (#41). Nov. 15 is ED due date, so you’d have to act quickly if that’s an option for you finacially.

http://cms.skidmore.edu/admissions/apply/early.cfm</a></p>

Couple more…Bennington, Marlboro, Goucher

But for me, after Skidmore, I would strongly suggest Beloit.

maybe Dickinson ¶ as well

Why limit to the northeast-too many stoms pummeling the corrider. Think about University of Richmond and some other LAC’s farther south. If you really want Northeast consider Hamilton or Colgate. Though these schools may not have the “liberal;” reputation that Wesleyan does, they have great professors, diverse enough student bodies and small classes like Wesleyan. Plus Richmond and Colgate have Division I sports which creates a nice school spirit and more diverse student body. (pLus Richmond is on the Amtrak corrider!)

“Oberlin is very midwest. Not comparable in any way.”

Oberlin and Wesleyan are comparable in virtually every way. If Wes is your ideal, IMHO it’s nuts not to look at Oberlin. For a similar atmosphere and somewhat easier admissions, look at Beloit, Lewis & Clark, and Bard.

^ Hanna is completely spot on, but I would also include Skidmore and Vassar.
None of the others mentioned come even close to being similar to Wes.

Vassar is just as difficult as Wesleyan to be accepted. Great thought though.

Colgate is a school with a wonderful reputation and is somewhat Wesleyan-ish. I highly recommend you taking a look at it.

I did not know Wesleyan is an American college.
Where is it?

^^that’s odd. You knew it a month ago: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1209782-2012-usnews-college-rankings.html</a> :)

Wesleyan…….

I think I remember now.
It was one of the colleges that my GC suggested as a “safety” or “backup”.

“Oberlin is very midwest. Not comparable to the northeast elite in any way.”

Oberlin is not comparable to “the northeast elite”?
Give me a freaking break!
