Wesleyan vs Brandeis QBReC Fellowship for pre-med

My son has been accepted into Wesleyan University and Brandeis University QBReC Fellowship programs. He aspires to attend medical school and wishes to partake in biology research during his undergraduate studies. Given the QBReC Fellowship, Brandeis’s program appears to be quite interesting and as appealing as Wesleyan University. While we plan to attend both schools’ admitted student events to get a feel for the campus culture, we would appreciate the insight into which path would be most appropriate for a bio/pre-med student academically.

Whichever one he feels more comfortable at, offers him access to what he wants and you can afford.

They’re both obviously top flight schools. And you can do research most anywhere just by asking. But being in a formal program for it might be that extra leg up. Many kids don’t ask - say they don’t have time or they’re just too introverted so that might be the shove he needs.

Good luck. No wrong answer here.

With respect to Brandeis, your son has an interest in perhaps its strongest program, biology, and perhaps its strongest sub-program, QBReC. On paper, at least, this might make him an ideal candidate for the school. Moreover, with this path, he could align himself especially naturally for his post-graduation goals.

With respect to Wesleyan, its general attributes — which differ from those of Brandeis and might not need extensive explication — may appeal to your son. He will have a sense for this after a visit. I recommend that he strongly consider this notably highly selective school as well.

double post.

Does the Brandeis program come with any extra aid bucks?

Yes, the QBReC program comes with an award totaling $82,000 ($20,500 annually).

Sounds too good to pass up provided campus culture is a good fit.

How does that compare with Wesleyan’s financial aid package?

He received almost the same amount from Wesleyan, so money is not a factor here. He probably needs to meet professors and other students at both places to see which fits him better.
