So I just got into Pomona off the waitlist, and they said they would match Wesleyan's financial aid offer, so I really have a tough decision to make. I really love both schools, and they're similar in many respects, but also have different feels. When I visited Pomona I really felt at home, and I loved the campus and the consortium, but I didn't get as good of a feel for the social scene. My host had a lot of things to do, so I didn't get to experience the nightlife as much. The food was AMAZING, along with the weather.

At Wesleyan everyone seemed very friendly, and the student body seemed more artsy. The nightlife was pretty crazy, which was fun, but also maybe it was a bit too much. The dorms and food were not as nice as at Pomona, but also were great.

The academics seem very equal at both schools, with Pomona probably getting the slight edge for overall academics, while Wesleyan might have a slight edge for the econ department. As of now I am interested in going to grad school after college, but of course that is always subject to change.

Anyways, what are your thoughts, opinons, etc?

I honestly think I fit in well at both colleges. I enjoy going to large parties just as much as I enjoy hanging out with my closest friends and discussing politics. The consortium really appeals to me because there are are different types of students at the different schools, but Wesleyan is also very diverse.

You can’t really go wrong. Where are you from? Where do you want to end up? Assuming you are equally comfortable on both campuses, I’d go with Pomona because:

1) the consortium gives you more options socially and academically
2) great weather makes it easier to try new things, push your boundaries

That said, if you are from LA, try Weslayan just to experience another part of the country. Or if you are hoping to land a job on Wall Street, you might have a stronger alumni network there if you choose Weslayan.

This is definitely a very personal decision and one that we probably can’t help you much with. As other posters have said, they are both great schools and will both provide you with wonderful education. Personally, being from California myself, I know I wouldn’t be able to handle the weather at Wesleyan (and the likelihood that long months of cold and darkness would have an impact on the overall experience for me), but on the other hand, I personally would fit in much better with the Wesleyan student body.

You sound like you pretty are 50/50 on them, but do you have an instinctual, gut feeling about one or the other? One that you–perhaps even inextricably–love more or feel more attached to?

If not, and if you really need a deal-breaker, it very well could be the weather and the effect it may have on the experience. I’ve heard that at many eastern schools, the long months of winter can somewhat cast a campus-wide depression over the colleges, especially for those not used to such conditions. Then again, many are able to deal with it or don’t even find it to be a problem; it’s just something to consider if you’re completely torn between the two.

WiscoKid, if you already are leaning toward Pomona, I doubt anyone will be able to give you a valid reason for choosing Wesleyan. The fact of the matter is that the two schools are pretty much equal in every objective regard, so it all comes down to your subjective choice.
