Wesleyan vs Trinity College

Hello all,

Could you please help me!? I'm torned in between choosing Wesleyan or Trinity College to go study.
They've both offered me great financial aid packages so I'm basically down to determining the pro/cons of each.
Does anybody have anything to offer on this matter?

By the way, I'm planning to either major in Economics, or double major in Economics and Film Studies.

Thanks!!

Wesleyan has one of the best film studies departments in the country, period. It’s really rigorous. The chair of our department is one of the eminent scholars in the subject—she helped to make film studies a serious academic subject. If you are seriously thinking about wanting to do film studies or otherwise be involved in film, I would def. say come to Wes. The department is amazing, the theater is amazing, we have a great film series that runs four days a week, we have a film making co-op, a film hall, etc. etc. I don't know much about Trinity’s program, but unless I’m much mistake, it’s not particularly well known.

Wesleyan is also generally more prestigious and competitive, if that matters to you. However, if you're not so concerned with the film studies stuff, I think your main focus should be fit. From what I know of Trinity, it is rather different from the generally left-leaning and very quirky Wes student body. Do you have any specific questions about Wes? I don’t know much about Trinity, but I’m happy to tell you about Wes.

weskid, what would you say to be top 5 most prestigious LAC's?
(excluding single-sex or largely single-sex schools, and if geographically limited to the Northeast.)

sf606508: Well, Amherst, Williams and Swarthmore are considered the top three, and Amherst, and Williams are probably the most well known to laymen of those three.

I don't really know what the next two would be. It depends on regional bias (ie. Pomona is often considered up there with AWS or close to it on these boards, but not many people on the east cost know it). Even on just the east coast, it kind of depends on where you are and your major...for example, as I said Wes would be considered top for Film Studies, while Middlebury excels and languages, etc. Whereas if you want hardcore math/science, Harvey Mudd is just about the best you can get, etc.

But really, among the top LACs (as defined by maybe top 15 or 20 on the US news, with a couple others thrown in, maybe more or less, this could be debated), there isn't really a important difference, between #5 and #15, IMO. The average man off of the street probably won’t know the school if you go to an LAC, whereas grad schools WILL known and respect it.

But this is just one person's perspective.

I would go with Wesleyan. In terms of prestige/opportunities Wesleyan > Trinity College. And, given you want to study film Wesleyan seems like an obvious choice to me. Trinity is more moderate/conservative though and Wesleyan is decisively liberal.
