West Campus Dorms--Quads?

Can someone explain to me how this works? I guess I am kind of confused about the difference between a "Quad" and a "Suite". I think it would be fun to have 4 roommates--but I definitely don't want to be jammed in a room with bunk beds. Is there a difference between a quad and a suite in the new West Campus dorms?

I don’t know what a quad is, but the suites on west campus are like this… you go in a door, there is a common area with couch and table, then a hallway with 4 rooms along it. All the ones I have been in are 2 singles on one side of the hall, a single and bathroom on the other, and a double at the end of it. They are very nice.

i totally agree with u rl, I think having a quad is fun but if we are going to be crammed or be stuck in bunk beds, then that would suck. I heard that for quads on west campus, you get bunk beds. Can someone verify this please?

I’ve seen Quads at other colleges, if what you mean is you’ve never seen one. They aren’t exactly fun…for instance, Siena College (another place I was going to transfer to) had 3-person rooms that they actual turned into quads to fit more kids. So now you have 4 kids in a 3 person dorm…not exactly spacious, even though you do get a private bathroom for just your room.

I haven’t gotten the rooming information yet though, so I have no idea how it works at Cornell specifically. There’s usually bunk beds somewhere…but probably not in all the quads. (I know at Binghamton there are 6-person suites, I wonder if Cornell has them too?)

Any verification on dorms would be great! Especially like, what dorms are us transfers usually put in? (list all haha)

Hermanns-- Should I request a single then? Say if I requested 3 other roommates, but we all asked for singles…would we be put in one of the new suites on West?

are you a prospective freshmen? all freshmen are housed on North, and none on west.

If you are a transfer student, there is a possibility of being on West although I doubt it with the housing dilemmas from this year.

There are…housing dilemmas? What’s the problem with them?

If that’s the case (I say this because the facebook group I’m on with all these GTs and Transfers discussing living on west campus) then where are most of the transfers going to be placed? South/East?

No, I’m a GT transfer…our applications say transfers are being placed on west. Why would it be otherwise?

That’s what I was told, I have no idea why it would be different. I’m sure they set aside plenty of housing specifically for transfers to choose from, so I’m sure West has plenty of room.

With that said, I might not pick my housing until June unless my friend decides on his GT sooner…he might stay at Siena, he might not. If he goes with me, I’d love to room with him for year one. I asked someone on here if it’s alright to request to room together, and considering we’re both transfers that’s usually fine with them. We might have had the possibility of rooming together anyway haha.

wateradept what facebook group r u in?

also, so quad on west campus do not have bunk bed? or they do? or most of the quad on west campus are bunk beds? And very very few are suite style?

The name of the group is Cornell '12 Guaranteed transfers, even though I wasn’t a GT I joined for information. I’m one of the most recent posters in it, you can probably pick me out by the way I type. XD

I have no clue about the dorms yet…I’m so excited to find out. I could really care less where they stick me, Cornell is still Cornell and I’m pumped.

I’ve never heard of a quad in one of the newer dorms. I am pretty sure they are only singles and doubles. Then there are singles/doubles on the hall, and suites with 5 people each, 3 singles, 1 double. My floor in becker has 4 suites and tons of rooms on the hall. I have a single on the hall and share the bathroom with like 7 or 8 other guys, but it really isn’t all that bad. Trust me, it beats living in the gothics by far. I am happy to be off campus (barely) next semester, even though I have certainly enjoyed becker (which is definitely the nicest dorm on west imo-house 5 (rose next year) and cook are the worst imo, cook has crappy food).

Are we even allowed to request particular dorms when we submit the housing forms anyway? If so, could you possibly list all the options on West Campus? (I just got admitted-I dont’ have the housing info yet).

I don’t think so. When I transferred in this semester I actually found someone that was trying to get out of his becker lease and knew the room I was getting. That was luck, and not possible for someone entering in the fall. Just hope you get lucky. I’d say its split about 70/30 with the transfers I know on west between new dorms and gothics, but its probably not accurate because I know so many transfer in becker and know less people in gothics. A lot of the people that came with me this semester ended up in cascadilla and sheldon court in college town though which really sucks for incoming students imo, but I doubt that will happen as much (if at all) for fall transfers. With spring, they just had to give us whatever was open.

Ah I see, thanks! My mom is perusing the dorm sites right now while I still want my info packets before I look at anything; she loves the Gothics, but everyone keeps saying most people there are anti-social (which can’t be entirely true.)

Besides, with each year brings a new group so you never know what the incoming transfers will bring to the table as far as social buzz and personalities go. But yeah, so basically we’re choosing between the new dorms and gothics, right? In that case I’ll see where I like.

I have heard bad things about Cascadilla…hope I don’t end up there.

The gothics aren’t antisocial, they are just crappy. They look nice until you go inside, but if you end up in them, it is not the end of the world. I am just spoiled living in becker, but I could manage in the gothics, but it can also be hit of miss with them. I have seen some really funky room setups in the gothics, ranging from a ginormous double to a very strange room. Basically, you walk in the room, it is a double, but then there are two more doors inside of it with tiny single rooms. I am not sure if this is what a quad is or not, but it is the crappiest room I have ever seen.

so basically no bunk beds in west campus dorms?
