What do current students think of the completed facilities of the West Campus Housing Initiative and the soon-to-be completed? Are these basically the best residential halls? How are the facilities? What do you think of the overall goal of the housing initiative (attainable? stupid? etc.)?

yeh when i was visiting cornell they said they were building new dorms and residencies comparable to the harvard ones. but i don't know if they are for freshman and when they will be completed . anyone know?

The new dorms are for upperclassmen, mainly for sophomores who opt to live on campus. Right now, there are 2 new buildings (Cook and Becker) with 1 coming up next December (Bethe), another next summer, and another in a year I think. These are usually the first ones to go in the housing lottery.

they're all big and sweet. Becker and Cook each have their own dining halls and Becker has a library-study lounge room in it that's very very nice.

As a sophomore, if you don't get into one of the new facilities through the housing lottery, what are the other facilites? Do you live on North Campus with the freshies or are there other residencies (aside from greeks, and off-campus)?

there's some cornell-owned buildings in collegetown and there's the west campus gothics.

What are the west campus gothics?

the west campus gothics are gothic style dorms on west campus. . .(lol)

Anyway, they really vary by building, and while the outside is nice, I didnt' care much for the inside. They just haven't been remodeled in a while, and some of the gothics don't even have laundry rooms, so you have to go use the machines in a different building.

However, I got a really bad housing lotto number along with everyone in my potential blocking group. . . . .so I will probably be stuck in one. I'm sure it will grow on me after living there for a while.

My number simply isn't good enough to get into cook or becker, unless by some miricle I suddenly find someone with a higher number by saturday that would want to block. . . .I'm not counting on it. There really is no bad housing, but the new houses are a step above the rest.

obviously the west campus gothics are gothic-style dorms located on west campus. however, you went on to answer the question as it's thrust implied, so i'll overlook the inane remark.

My d is in one of the dorms in Collegetown. She really likes it. Her group of friends wanted to be in Collegetown. The thought of climbing the big hill everyday from west campus didn't thrill them so that was their first choice.. As her lottery group were all engineering and ILR students, the walk from collegetown to her classes isn't too bad. I thought her dorm was real nice.

I climb the west campus hill at least twice a day...it's so good for you! people make too big of a deal of it. There are only about 100' that are actually hard work.

"you went on to answer the question as it's thrust implied, so i'll overlook the inane remark."

Actually, I was poking fun at your inane question. "What are the west campus gothics?" It definately leaves one thinking "Well. . . .what about them?" I'm glad my the later expansion merited a pardon for the previous statement. When one seeks an elaborate answer it is usually necessary to ask a focused question. Thanks.

when i said 100' i meant 100 horizontal feet...not a particular 100' high stretch haha :p

haha, with 100 vertical feet it would have to be renamed libe cliff.

I get the hilarious mental picture of upperclassmen repelling down the slope to get back home.

That would be sweeeeeeeet. :) hahaha... The true application of the rock wall.

btw they're building a full court basketball court on west.

indoor or outdoor?
