West Campus in-house lottery system

I am a sophomore living in a single in a suite in Hans Bethe House on West Campus and I'm hoping to be able to live here next year as well. Does anybody know how the in-house lottery system works? Does it involve randomly assigned time slots, like the general housing lottery? Do you get to keep the same room, or do you get a different room? What are the chances that I'll be able to stay in Hans Bethe? Thanks.

Sorry, I can’t answer your question but I’d like to know how you enjoy living there and what your single dorm room is like … spacious? small? far away from your classes? I’m interested in that building as well. Hopefully I’ll be accepted as a Fall '10 transfer

You get assigned a random number. On room assignment day they call out numbers from 1 to whatever, and if your number is called you get to walk into a room with all the floor plans and pick a room. If you’re blocking with people, they come along with you. I don’t know how many beds are available for in-house lottery in Hans Bethe, so I can’t say anything about your chances.

I’d like to know when the in-house lottery system occurs. I’m going to be an incoming spring transfer, probably living on West, and I’d like to stay there for my junior year too (hopefully blocking with some folks.)

Thanks for the reply det_A-lambda=0. Complex123, I definitely enjoy living in Hans Bethe. My single is 12 ft x 10 ft. It’s not huge, but I can’t imagine being able to make use of any extra space. The building is only 2 years old, so everything is modern and in really good shape. My single is in a suite that has a total of 3 singles and a double, as well as a common room, and a bathroom. So, I share a bathroom with 4 other guys. You could also get a single in a hallway (not in a suite). All the new West Campus houses (Becker, Bethe, Cook, Keeton, and Rose) have pretty similar setups and amenities, so you should be satisfied if you get in any of those houses. The Gothics are a different story. I do think I prefer Bethe because our dining hall is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, whereas Becker, Keeton, and Rose are closed for lunch. Bethe is also the closest dorm to Noyes Community Center, and West Side Express (a late night fast food place) is part of Bethe. I am a little jealous of the people in Becker because they have air conditioning in their rooms, whereas we only have AC in the hallways and common rooms. But, it still doesn’t get too hot in the rooms, and we have ceiling fans. As far as proximity to classes goes, IMO which building you live in on West Campus doesn’t matter that much. West Campus runs parallel to Central Campus and regardless of which dorm you live in, you are pretty close to the Arts Quad (you just have to walk up the slope). Engineers may prefer Bethe because it is the closest West Campus dorm to the Engineering Quad. But really, West Campus is so small and compact that even if you live in Cook, which is the farthest dorm from the Engineering Quad, you’re only tacking on like 2 extra minutes to your walk (if you are going to the Engineering Quad). No big deal.

It usually takes place towards the end of the fall semester. There is a general West campus lottery during the spring, but upperclassmen usually get the shaft in that one. A lot of people end up moving off campus.

Wateradept, the in-house lottery occurs in November. I’m not sure of the exact date.

Ugh. That doesn’t bode well…no worries I guess. I have a friend attempting transfer for next fall, depending if he gets in I might room with him no matter where we end up. I don’t want to get stuck with north, though…and I don’t think I’m ready for collegetown.

Hopefully they have something set aside for people getting their in the spring.

hey this is random also - but do you live with a lot of transfer students? i heard that a lot of spring/fall transfers get placed into west campus. do you know what their dorms are like? (i.e. whether they’re really far from the main quad, are small, bad condition, etc.)

gosnia, a new transfer student actually lives in my suite in Hans Bethe on West Campus, and I actually just recently met two other transfer students who live on my floor. I personally don’t know how the transfer system works, so I don’t know if it’s normal for them to get such good housing.
