West Campus Transfer Housing Questions

I am a guaranteed transfer who has been accepted to Cornell and intends on going in the fall. I know that the majority of transfer students live on West Campus, but I have some questions about it:

What particular buildings do people get to choose from when deciding where to live on West? What are some of the buildings like, and what are some pros and cons of each?

Do transfers tend to live corridor or suite style? Is any particular living style recommended?

How far away is West Campus from classes, particularly those in the ILR buildings?

Thanks for your help.

First, congratulations on your acceptance! Here’s what I know about the housing…

1) There are five houses on West Campus where you could live e.g. Alice Cook, Carl Becker, Hans Bethe, William Keeton, and Flora Rose.

[West Campus House System](<a href=“Residential Life | Student & Campus Life | Cornell University”>Residential Life | Student & Campus Life | Cornell University)

I don’t know the details about them, but some have a more gothic style with lacking amenities, while others are newer and have more updated facilities like laundry machines. Each house also offers buffet style eateries.

Here is the daily menu for each of the houses: http://melian3.campuslife.cornell.edu:7790/dining_menus/faces/menu_start.jspx?_afrLoop=18345328885285442&Adf-Window-Id=w0&_afrWindowMode=0&_adf.ctrl-state=1b4akpa2hf_3&_afrRedirect=18345329264744442

2) The girl who led my campus tour said the houses on West Campus are suite style.

3) You have to walk up a slope and some distance (could be far for some) to get to ILR.

it’s about a 10 minute walk from west campus to Ives if you are moving at a reasonable pace.

the “eateries” are west are complete full dining halls with excellent options.

there are suites in all of the new buildings at the ends of halls, but there are also corridors in between with rooms (singles w/ definitely, and also doubles I think but I’m not 100% sure right now). all of the gothics are corridors. I don’t know where transfers tend to live. one of the years I was in a gothic, I lived on a hall with a couple of transfers, but I’ve also known transfers who lived in the main houses in suites, so at least based on my experience there is no “normal” choice for transfers to make.

some of the gothics do have laundry facilities, but others do not. if you lived in a gothic without laundry you would just take your laundry over to another building. there are definitely the most important amenities like adequate bathrooms, kitchens, and lounges in all of the gothics. the largest rooms on all of west are found in the gothics, but there are also plenty of normal to small rooms among the gothics as well. the rooms in the new houses are generally rather small but of course they are <10 old rather than pushing 100 years old.

I would say that among the actual house buildings (not the gothics) there are hardly any important differences. they were all built around the same time, with the same general features, and thus are pretty interchangeable.

let me know if you have any other questions. I could even go look stuff up for you if you want, since I am in and out of a lot of the houses on a regular basis.

redblue2011,
Just so you know the halls with the highest numbers of transfers are actually the Collegetown halls, Cascadilla and Sheldon Court. Overall more transfers are in West because there are 5 buildings there, but you should learn about Collegetown too since you could end up there.
Both of these halls are doubles and single rooms on a corridors. Collegetown is closer to ILR and you don’t have to walk up hill. It is also the downtown area for students so there are restaurants, coffee shops, and bars.

Over all you don’t get to choose what building you are in. You get randomly placed.

Thanks for all of your responses!
