My daughter is considering west chester u and we are from NJ. I've read that this school is "cliquey"(spelling?) and that many kids from the same high schools in Pa. attend West Chester. Any thoughts or knowledge on this? Thanks

A lot of the kids are from PA high schools because the in-state tuition is 2-3X less than going out of state. I visited and loved it. I did not get the "clique"vibe from the students. I visited last spring and kids were outside throwing a football around and girls were listening to music and painting their nails. That day was beautiful. The whole school is beautiful, and everyone was super friendly. I am also from new jersey and have applied.

I know of a few people from our NJ HS that have attended in past years. They seem to like it!

Any state college is generally going to have 90% of in-state students and most of them are from within two hours of the college. West Chester probably draws from a bit further because it’s one of the only colleges in that tier that is in a semi-urban area. It’s a nice little college and has a good reputation, especially for music.

Very nice town, with a great active historic downtown. The University has been completing a replacement of most of their student housing. They also have a new student recreation center under construction. My daughter has several friends who attend who really like it.

Many years ago when I was in high school in the area, I got locked in the West Chester library on a Saturday when it closed before I was finished a research assignment for school. I (with a friend) had to bust out the fire door, setting off the alarm. The place has a warm spot in my heart. :).

momofwildchild- that’s too funny! i really hope i get in.

For better or worse, it’s the upscale, suburban college in the PASSHE system (i.e., the public non-flagship used-to-be-teachers-colleges). The town is cute and affluent, and I believe the student body is whiter (or whiter and Asian-er) and richer than at most of the other state colleges, at least in the eastern part of the state. Kids seem to like it a lot, and plenty thrive there. There’s decent public transportation access to/from Philadelphia, by the way.

Unfortunately, rail service does not directly connect Philadelphia to West Chester. Rail service now stops in Elywn, which is several miles away. There are public buses throughout the area.
