Hello I’m from cali and plan on going to school in New york. I was wondering how the expierence is and how different of a change it would be besides just the weather. Also how did you move your stuff from home to dorms to the east coast.
Are you talking about New York city or just somewhere in New York state? I’m going to assume you mean the city. It will feel significantly different from Cali, and not just because of the weather. Everything in New York is very fast paced- especially in Manhattan. People will seem rude because they’re in a rush to get where they need to be. It’s also more work-centric than Cali. For people who work in Manhattan, their career is their life. Taking vacations and other “lazy” things are looked down upon. The other boroughs are a bit more laid-back. But it’s still the US- most people adjust fine rather quickly.
To move your stuff across the country, the people I know who came to the NE from the west either made it a road trip (this can be a lot of fun- especially if you have friends going too) or took a plane and hired movers to bring their stuff.
DD went from southern California to upstate NY in 2008 with one large suitcase.
Container Store held, then shipped her items for free, when we purchased most items through them.
Comforter (aloha print), blankets and 400 ct. sheets were pre-ordered and arrived same day as move-in; we lucked out on the timing! Surf decor and 5 ft. surfboard “memo board” were shipped 1 week before move-in.
Daughter from day 1 had to explain to every person that asked: “WHY would anyone from California go to upstate NY?” DAILY explanations!
Came home for job and is happy to have missed the worst winter snow season!!!
Car came second year, with Dad driving, because freshman weren’t allowed to have cars.
(BTW and FWIW: native Californians don’t use the term “Cali”-it’s a pet peeve.)
There might be some additional social stratification or pressure that you don’t see quite so much on the Left Bank.
