Home State? Budget? Large/Small/Urban/Rural/Religious?? Intended Major? Need more info.

While difficult to accurately answers your great questions, I believe we’re looking at: home state is colorado, schools under 10,000 students undergrad, intended potential major: political science or marketing, budget tbd, prefer stronger academic environment. Thanks!

Are you in need of financial aid?

Maybe. I need to gather the options w/ & w/out

If you are OOS and in need of financial aid, then should eliminate the UC’s and Cal States in California. You will little to no financial aid and no merit aid from these schools. If you are interested in California, you should focus on the privates such as Occidental, Loyola, USC, Santa Clara, Chapman, Pepperdine to name a few.

Thanks - what are your thoughts about the Claremont schools?

The Claremont colleges are a great option however, your SAT score is on the low side for these schools which are very competitive. Pitzer is test optional so they that might be a good choice. Also they are not very generous with financial aid if needed.

Thanks Gumbymom. Who is providing the more generous fa?

Occidental met our household EFC; Pitzer didn’t offer us any financial aid at all (not even subsidized Stafford loan). We even went to the trouble to appeal their decision, because my son would have loved to go there (he also applied to CMC, but was rejected). The Claremont Consortium is terrific, and unlike anything else.

If you’re willing to venture north, look at Puget Sound, Whitman, and Willamette.

What is the culture like at Puget Sound, Whitman, and Willamette? My daughter loves the outdoors and athletics (skiing at Winter Park, CO all winter and playing lacrosse year round), so I will research the schools to better understand the students, campus vibe, social opportunities, etc while cracking the books too. They appear to be have good reputations.

I appreciate the Oxy feedback. I had a few friends graduate in the late 80s……and they enjoyed it!

Whitman is wonderful. Outdoorsy, friendly, rigorous, collaborative. In a remote area of the state but Walla Walla is a nice small city due to being in a booming wine region. Near some skiing, whitewater rafting and mountains. Check it out…you’ll be glad you did.
