West Coast?

I'm in NY, and I can't decide if I want to apply to Stanford or UC Berkeley. I think both are fantastic schools and I really think that I would be happy there. Plus the picture of Stanford make me want to die! But...

I don't want to be so far from home. I love my family and I want to be able to come home for more than just Christmas/Thanksgiving/summer. Even summer would be hard because all my stuff would have to move from one side of the country to the other. I don't know if I could handle that distance.

Thoughts?

There are plenty of non-stop flights from New York to the Bay Area.
In the summer, at both schools, there are storage companies that can pick up your extra stuff and store it for you over the summer. You would just take a couple of suitcases back and forth for the essentials.

True, but air travel isn’t free, or even cheap. How often are your parents willing to fly you home for the weekend?

Learn how to pack light. You don’t need to bring everything with you, and the big stuff can be shipped over later. You will leave stuff on or near campus over the summer anyways.

You can keep in touch with your friends and family back home without having to fly back and forth. Consider that?

I’m in the same boat from Southern California to the Northeast such as Boston or NY, gonna do it only time in your life where you can just pack up and move with no real worries not to mention it is only temporarily and you get to see a different side of the country and different people. Whole new experience for while you in college!!

Both Stanford and Cal Berkeley are indeed great schools. Both are very different, albeit both are in the SF Bay Area.
With VOIP, or Skype, you can almost feel like you are in the room w/your Mom & Dad. With planning you can get discounted fares, and your parents will LOVE the opportunity to come visit you in California!
