West Point Nomination but NOT Pre-Qualified???

My daughter just found out yesterday that she received a Congressional nomination for West Point however, about a month ago she was mailed a letter telling her that she didn't pre-qualify and to not continue her application process.

After researching the requirements for the Military Academy I know that she is a strong candidate.

Has anyone ever heard of this happening before? It seems so odd. How on Earth could they say that they didn't even want to see the rest of her application when she obviously is good enough to beat out the hundreds of people who were competing for this nomination?

I understand that there are different levels of qualifying and that a nomination, in itself, doesn't mean you will be accepted but it certainly should account for something.

Any advice on how to proceed from here?

The nomination is only the legal authority to admit to West Point. Did they tell you the area that was deficient? It seems that the qualifiers are academic, fitness and a medical physical. Did she submit the writing portions of her SAT or ACT? I don’t see the harm in contacting the admissions dept. to see if they can at least tell her why. So sorry to hear this, it is so highly selective.

Good points from ECmother. Did she take the physical fitness test? When I took it there were a bunch of candidates on their third try. Does she have medical issues? Those can be worked through your doctor.

Thanks! She has sent in an email requesting some clarification. It will certainly help to know what it was that turned them off.
