West Point- Simple Daily Life Questions

These questions may sound silly but they are pretty hard to find on the internet lol. Sorry I might sound very ignorant but oh well.

1) At west point how many units do you typically take a semester? Does everyone graduate in 4 years (assuming they don't just quit)?

2) Is there a lot of homework for engineering major? How many hours of studying to you typically put towards it? I'm just confused because I don't understand how cadets are able to get good grades while doing so many other activities.

3) could you post what a typical schedule would be like? not just classes but wake up time, activities, etc.

4) How hard is it to get off campus? Do you have to get permission to go out to town for the day? Is there even time for that?

5) If you are in a relationship with another cadet, are you ever able to spend time with each other?

6) Are you allowed to have a cell phone once the actual plebe year starts?

7) For females: how was it being a female at the academy? For males: any info you can add, or how males and females got along. this is a fairly broad question

8) Apparel: for females, do you chose your own underwear and bras? Are you required to wear certain pajamas?

9) are you allowed to order stuff online and have it shipped to you?

A lot of units, your academic day is pretty full. Homework is manageable for most cadets but chronic lack of sleep is fairly common. Cadets learn to get by on 6 hours of sleep give or take. I can send you a PowerPoint with typical day. You probably should reach out to a female graduate of West Point for several of your questions. The association of graduates website might help you find a graduate in your area or the local field force rep can help you find someone to speak with. I was a plebe when the women from the class of 1980 were firsties. Things are much better for female cadets today but it is a hard school to get in and a difficult school to get through

  1. At west point how many units do you typically take a semester? Does everyone graduate in 4 years (assuming they don’t just quit)?

Everyone graduates in 4 years or they don’t. unless you get turned back for some sort of honor viloalation. you take 22 credits a semester

  1. Is there a lot of homework for engineering major? How many hours of studying to you typically put towards it? I’m just confused because I don’t understand how cadets are able to get good grades while doing so many other activities.

there is a ton of homework, and you don’;t have time to do it all, thats the point of the school, they teach you how to pick through the BS and study what you need to know.

  1. could you post what a typical schedule would be like? not just classes but wake up time, activities, etc.

You wake up at 6:45, then have formation at 7:00, then have breakfast, then class until 12;00 lunch, then you have some sort of briefing after lunch for a half hour, then at 1:00 pm you have class until 3:30 pm then you have varsity/club sport practice/drill and ceremony practice, then optional dinner at 5:30 then evening study until bed time at 11:30

  1. How hard is it to get off campus? Do you have to get permission to go out to town for the day? Is there even time for that?

you basically can’t go off campus if you are a plebe, or a yearling. you can leave if you are a cow or a firsite, but there is not much to do outside the walls of west point. you have to go to NYC which is an hour away and you need a pass for that. plebes get one pass per semester, yearlings get 2, cows get 4 and off post privileges and firsts get unlimited passes and off post privileges.

  1. If you are in a relationship with another cadet, are you ever able to spend time with each other?

in the evenings

  1. Are you allowed to have a cell phone once the actual plebe year starts?

yes

  1. For females: how was it being a female at the academy? For males: any info you can add, or how males and females got along. this is a fairly broad question

males and females get along pretty well. obviously there are different physical standards for women which will always be a point of contention, but overall we got along well.

  1. Apparel: for females, do you chose your own underwear and bras? Are you required to wear certain pajamas?

Not a female, but women are allowed to choose their own underwear and bras for the most part. during field training they have to meet certain guidelines, but those will be pointed out to you.

  1. are you allowed to order stuff online and have it shipped to you?
    yes
