West Virginia University for Musical Theatre or Acting

Can someone give some thoughts on WVU for MT or Acting? We saw them on a hidden gem posting and are interested some feedback. Just found out it offers in-state tuition even though we are out of state so may be an affordable option to add to the mix. Thanks.

I pmd you @Wickersham2365

I would also love any info/insight on WVU’s musical theatre program and faculty. I know the program is only a few years old so it doesn’t have the history many other programs have. Comments? Experiences?

Have you learned anything you could share since posting your question?

That post # 3 was to Wickersham

@2017MTMomma I pmd you

I would be interested in any info on WVU as well. This seems mysterious.

@4dramadogs lol I hope you didn’t think I was being mysterious ! I just pm people because sometimes the message gets too long to post.
We know about WVU to some degree because we used to live in WV, know a lot of kids who go there and we visited and saw a show last year. It was a good show, the kid we know in the acting BFA seems happy there . I do not know any current mt students but we know someone who was accepted recently for fall. The program is a BFA in mt and the program is relatively new. A few years in. I seem to remember that the leads in the show were masters students?
The school is very sports oriented. It is a large campus about 29000 students i think. The creative arts center is very nice and on a different part of the campus. It would probably warrant a visit. I know they are part of the academic common market for in state tuition for MT for those in that market. Also reciprocity for neighboring states I believe for tuition reduction. Like Ohio etc. tuition is very reasonable.
WVU has a rep for being a party school. I think that rep is probably deserved lol but so are tons of other schools. Plus for MT students that becomes less of a factor as they are too busy.

Oh and just looked and the masters program hey offer is a masters in acting. That probably comes into play when casting shows.

Thanks! We visited and my S was accepted so it’s on the list of possibles.

oh well you already know about the school then @4dramadogs . Congrats on his acceptance. My D has a friend in Acting, Tech theatre and in Dance there.

@4dramadogs what was your impression of the program? Since we are four hours away, I think our D is going to tour and audition all at once. Hoping for more insight from others. We are in Ohio but the program does offer in-state tuition to Ohio residents so it’s very affordable.

Also…is your son MT?

@Wickersham2365 Yes, my son is MT. We were impressed. It seems that WVU has big plans for this program and they are willing to invest in it. Really engaged staff and beautiful facilities. We saw a student directed Spelling Bee but I would like to see a full musical.

I would love more information as well. My daughter has been accepted to the BFA acting program and, much to our pleasant surprise, has received a scholarship that pretty much brings tuition down to the in-state level (we’re OOS). We liked Morgantown, and she really liked the two acting classes she attended. This is her main concern, and mine: What is the program’s reputation, and how much does that matter? I ask, because I happened to meet a real, working professional actor at my gym the other day, and she said reputation counts for a lot, and she wasn’t that keen on WVU. I have no idea if she knows what she’s talking about, which is why I’m posting here. My DD still kind of yearns to be in school in NYC, although she’s not yet in a program there. Thanks. BTW, we also saw Spelling Bee and really enjoyed it.

My D’s voice coach has done Summer stock with many of the students and faculty at WVU. She has had great things to say about the their level of talent and professionalism which is how we ended up looking at WVU. My D goes next week for audition so we shall learn more then. In the meantime, we would love any more info as well.

I can tell you that Morgantown is a great place to live!

Good luck to your daughter! I have to say that the CCA dean seemed lovely (I believe he teaches voice), and we really liked the head of the acting program.

To give a little plug to WVU folk, we know a lot of kids who go there or who are going there this fall…
There are no folks friendlier. There is also no lack of school spirit or massive loyalty to a university. I also feel like the theatre dept is supported by the community etc.
