West Virginia University (WVU) Or a University in Singapore?

Hello!

I’m a student from Sweden and my school has an exchange programme with WVU which has caught my eye. I was wondering if someone could give me some information about WVU and how the life is there, also as an international student if you know.

Another thing is that my school also have agreements with two universities in Singapore that are ranked 12th and 13th by the QS Top Universities. Should I choose them before WVU? What are your thoughts?

Thanks

And also, how are the demographic and people at WVU? I mean like snobs, rednecks and so…

The Singapore universities are higher ranked so they may complement your degree better.
If you want to discover the USA and don’t need prestige for your resume, obviously WVU is a better choice.
What do you study ?

I’m studying Industrial Engineering, which I heard is different from the US Industrial Engineering. It’s true I like the US, I’ve been to both Florida and New York and I really liked it there.

It’s true that the Singapore universities will be better on my CV but I think it would be more fun in the US, because I have many friends that went there to study.

You’re unlikely to get a job in the US after you graduate, so you should pick the school that will be most respected in your home country/part of the world. Since school status is important for Singaporean employers, you should go to a school there. Come to the US on vacation or consider a semester abroad program.

I’m not thinking of either working in Singapore or the US, prefer Sweden. But I do want to know how the life is at WVU before choosing one of the other two universities.

Wvu is a typical big state US university. Big sports, lots of different majors, an honors program for those more academically enclined…

WVU is not a highly ranked school. It is in a backward area, so the instate admissions standards are not that high. It is a research university with good faculty though. It might be a more fun location than Singapore, near the mountains and so on with an interesting culture. If this is for a year abroad, the prestige of the school may not matter much in Sweden.

The group that identified the problem with the Volkswagen diesel engine emission cheater device are at WVU. If you like automotive stuff, that could be a good place to go. http://www.npr.org/2015/09/24/443053672/how-a-little-lab-in-west-virginia-caught-volkswagens-big-cheat

WVU is in the mountains, about four hours by car from Washington, DC. There are a lot of outdoors activities available nearby. If you like camping/hiking/etc. you might really like WVU. To get an idea of what is happening near and on campus, check the university and local tourism board calendars:
