Does anyone know anything about Western Carolina's musical theater program, such as the size of each class (freshman, sophomore, etc.), the rigor of the training, etc.?

i do not know the size of the musical theater program , but i do know many of the band students. if i were you i would stay away from that place though .

When we were there for D’s audition in November they said they were aiming for a total of about 16-18 per class. We didn’t get to visit classes at the time so we couldn’t see what the training was like there, but the ballet class we watched looked to be reasonably challenging.

At the time, the program wasn’t yet big enough (I think there were only about 45 students) to support multiple levels of dance every semester so they were alternating. Usually one level 2 or level 3 class each semester in one of the disciplines.

What impressed us most was their production of Sweeney Todd that we saw. We were absolutely AMAZED by the level of talent and professionalism of the cast, and the incredible orchestra! What struck my D most was that while the leads were phenomenal, pretty much every ensemble member was clearly communicating a very specific character in every scene. In her mind that was evidence of some great acting training going on somewhere. And it was obvious that the music training was very intense. The music was quite complicated, and we were just plain FLOORED by how incredible the voices were.

And the campus is truly lovely. Honestly, she very seriously considered this school based on her interview with the department head and her impression of the show alone. We would have planned a trip to sit in on classes if she hadn’t found that she liked aspects of some of her other acceptances better.

I don’t know what musgrove’s experience with WCU is, but I don’t put a lot of credence in his or her statement to stay away with no further explanation.
