Western Schools for the 3.0-3.3 kid

My daughter’s list so far:
University of Oregon
University of Oregon
University of Oregon
Univ (…you get the picture)

Mom’s addition to her list: Southern Utah University and UC Riverside (reach: UC Irvine)

Shrinkwrap: Cal Lutheran is where my boy attends football camp every summer. It is a lovely campus and has nice dorms and good camp food, according to the boy, but since my girls werent interested that is really all I know about it at this point. Check with me in a couple of years and I may have a clearer idea :)

Calvin what I did with recalcitrant kids who didn’t want to visit or consider a school was take them there anyway but make the visit a sidelight to another fun area experience. I also gave my DDs the power to bag the visit at any point after the first activity.

It worked well overall.

My older D knows several kids who have gone to Cal Lutheran. All were female and athletes. Of the 3 I know of they all graduated in 4 yrs. I ran into the mother of one of the girls and she said her 2nd D had recently transfered to Cal Lutheran from another Ca christian college. They were not happy with the first school. The older D loved Cal Lutheran and the family is pushing the school for child 3. All were good students not great students. B+ average in the “regular” college track. Few if any AP’s.
I have heard from a couple of Mom’s that the problem with Monterey Bay is if your child is not happy there the courses are hard to transfer. One Mom said the classes at Monterey Bay are slightly unique to Monterey Bay and the other Cal States and Uc’s don’t always award credit for a similar course.

Very helpful, thanks! Would you mind pm’ing the name of the school the transfer didn’t like, and why? We have several “Ca Christian” schools in the running.

Apologies for not reading the entire thread, but I’m not sure UC Santa Cruz should be on the list. My neighbor’s daughter applied there for fall entry and was not accepted. She had a good gpa (> or = 3.5), ~27 ACT, and good ECs. It’s extremely competitive.

Has anyone had a different outcome with similar stats?

I didn’t think ANY UC’s where on "the list."Post #162.

Oh wait…UC Merced is on it. Some folks (maybe my son) are trying UCSC anyway, as they give “points” for 1 point GPA increases between sophomore and junior year.

FWIW, admission rate for GPA range 3-3-29 and under is about 30 percent.

http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/pdf/ucsc_chart.pdf

SiR’d class of 2010.

“The average GPA for the incoming freshmen is 3.61. The average SAT-Reasoning scores were also strong for this fall’s freshmen: 1700 composite, 562 critical reading, 563 writing, and 576 mathematics.”

If that can’t be the children of CC helicopter moms, who could they be?

Shrinkwrap: We took our D down to Cal Lutheran for a visit this last June. Another family from our HS took their S as well. The campus is lovely. The dorms are great, and they have a great gym. The academics seemed good, and the Financial Aid (especially the Merit Aid ) is very nice. If you are accepted to Cal Berkeley, UCLA, UC Davis or UC Santa Barbara, they match the cost.

Am new to this thread, but have you considered Linfield College in McMinnville OR?

shrinkrap-- “they give “points” for 1 point GPA increases between sophomore and junior year” – does this mean from (example) 2.5 to 3.5, or 2.9 to 3.0? In other words, a whole point, or just a higher number left of the decimal?

Not sure when the “from” “to” is, but I think the former, but this is what it says…“one full grade point”

Improvement in Academic Performance
The faculty will award up to 100 points for recent improvement in academic performance. Students showing improvement in grades from their sophomore year to their junior year by at least one full grade point will be given consideration in this area. Only courses in the “a–g” subject areas will be calculated for this purpose.

My son went from about 2.1 first semester sophomore year, to 4.0, end of junior year.Still just a 3.09 though.

And yes, Linfield comes up a lot, but I m only pushing son to consider OOS for “reaches”. His SAT’s are fine, but the GPA is making this tricky.Haven’t said much to him about OOS yet, but I’m keeping a short list.

I just wanted to be sure that those who may have their kids apply to UCR or UCSC read the threads on getting your admission rescinded that have been posted in the forums this last month. For these schools, and some of the CSUs there is an admissions condition that says your senior year GPA can’t drop below a 3.0 and you can’t get a D. There are admits reporting that their admissions to UCR and UCSC were rescinded for these reasons. My son received a D in AP Calc second semester, but is going to a CSU. They use a GPA eligibility cut-off so he didn’t have a problem. Seems like the kids reporting in for UCR and UCSC didn’t have that wiggle room if they had the 3.0-3.3 range.

Just trying to save some parents and kids from the white knuckle experience. There are many surprises senior year, many of them not all that pleasant. I truly don’t know if you could accept a UC and a CSU offer to hedge yourself. I’m sure glad my son didn’t go with a UC as it appears we may well have been going to plan b now.

Bump (10)…

I haven’t read the entire thread and don’t know if these schools have already been listed.

University of Idaho – Moscow, ID
Lewis Clark State College (not to be confused with Lewis and Clark in Portland) – Lewiston, ID
Whitworth College – Spokane, WA

Any updates?

Has anyone noticed how much more California privates cost, compared to Oregon and Washington?

Loyola Marymount $53,422 [Undergraduate Cost of Attendance](http://financialaid.lmu.edu/General_Information/Undergraduate_Cost_of_Attendance.htm)

Santa Clara $53,742 [Santa Clara University - Financial AidCost of Attendance](Financial Aid - Santa Clara University)

Gonzaga $39,840 ( can that be right???) [Estimated Costs - Gonzaga University](Admission | Gonzaga University)

Whitworth $38,654 [Whitworth University Financial Aid Office - Costs for Undergraduate Students](Page Not Found | Whitworth University)

Eastern Washington University in Cheney, WA and Central Washington University in Ellensburg, WA are also good for students like this- I’m from WA and know many people who go to both schools. Both are surprisingly good for music and education if that is an interest. Winters can be harsh in both areas, but for someone interested in the outdoors (EWU is very close to a lot of Eastern WA skiing especially) might be a good option.

@Shrinkrap, cost at Gonzaga and Whitman is likely down that low compared to CA privates because cost of living in Spokane, WA is extremely low. Living off campus in either area is extremely affordable- it’s reasonable to find apartments for $400/month, sometimes even without roommates.

That makes sense.

Hmm…speaking of Whitman, it’s ALMOST "up there’ with the California privates! $49,890!

Glad to see this thread is back in action. Shrinkrap, does your son have a college list that he/you might be willing to share since we’re both in CA and have kids with similar GPAs?

He doesn’t but I do…well, he would love to attend Santa Clara, SLO or UCSB, but he knows these are huge reaches. …here is my back up plan…(last SAT was almost 1900, EC’s are editor, student council, varsity captain)

Sonoma State
CSU Monterey Bay
Cal Lutheran
Point Loma
Whitworth
Gonzaga
Loyola Marymount
+/-Willamette

^ thank you for sharing that. “Our” list for the western schools at this point include:

Sonoma State
SFSU
UC Santa Cruz (high match or reach – who the heck knows anymore?!)
Western Washington State
U of Oregon

…and then a few east coast schools that don’t belong on this thread…but are on a par w/ the 3.0-3.3 GPA and 1800s SAT we’re looking at.

^ So; Are you and yours thinking a shot at UCSC are is worth a UC app and subject tests? I am still thinking about this.
