Do you have any financial limitations? Are you considering CSU’s?

Just an update on one of the colleges in the list above. Western State College of Colorado is now called Western State Colorado University as of a few months ago. From their website: WSCU is a public, liberal arts university located in Gunnison, Colo. With an enrollment of 2,300 taught by 120 faculty members, WSCU offers bachelors of arts degrees in 22 areas of study, a bachelor of fine arts, master of arts in education and a master of fine arts in creative writing.

I was wondering about updates. I can’t BELIEVE it’s been more than two years! Is it still appropriate for this thread?

I updated the list to include a few high match schools like University of Puget Sound and Willamette. I added LMU because two of the three people going there from my graduating class had less than a 3.5 UC GPA. To anyone who objects, note that Chapman and WWU are on the list. Western Washington is probably a much harder admit for B students than either of those two schools (especially since UPS underadmitted this year)

i dont mind where i go honestly, but id like to go to a college with sports teams(d1), i just live with my mom, so i do have financial limitations-also what about gonzaga to add

I wouldn’t put Willamette, LMU, Gonzaga, or CPP on there, nor Chapman, especially for film, because it’s possible ( and the first three have good sports; Willamette is Div III, and the others are I. I think CPP is Div II ) but not a safety or match, which is what this was supposed to be. There are plenty of reaches.

But it’s not my thread, and it can evolve. If WWU or Chapman don’t belong anymore, It might make more sense to take them off rather than add more that don’t belong.

The original idea was “decent chance” for 3.0- 3.3.

But as I said ; things evolve.

ebruin, do you have a ballpark figure? Have you calculated your efc? Have you considered living at home?

I think it is a VERY good list… and also very helpful. I think there is going to be a lot of variation too, when you factor in test scores, EC’s and whether you are full-pay or not. My DS12 got into a few of the schools on this list… with a 3.3 and 2200 SAT scores. He got accepted to WWU… full ride, UPS…20,000 a year merit and U of Denver…10,000 a year merit.

Shrinkrap, for non engineering majors, Cal Poly Pomona is at least a match, if not a safety. The average GPA was a 3.32 while the middle 50% of students scored between a 450-560 on CR and a 480-620 on M. I suspect that if the CDS excluded the students accepted into CPP’s engineering program, the average GPA and SATs would go down substantially.

You’re probably right that I shouldn’t have included LMU. The students I know that are going there all took at least 5 APs in high school. Plus at least one is super wealthy (drives a Mercedes), so I’m assuming being full pay helped. But Willamette should stay. The only reason their SAT range is so high is because they mass email a free application to get students to apply and then throw out money to try to get them to enroll. As a result, they’ve got a much lower yield than either UPS or Lewis & Clark (its peer schools). As long as a low B student interviews at the school, they’ll probably get a fat envelope in the mail. Plus it’s not like they have much to loose other than $10 for sending scores. Willamette only requires ~250 word essay on the topic of the applicant’s choice. It’s not exactly a time consuming app.

^ Fair enough,. Makes sense to separate engineering at CPP. But I don’t see mixing GPA with SAT at California publics. In my experience, it just doesn’t work. For my son, GPA was not remotely related to SAT. Different profile for daughter.

Both high income urm.

As they say; your milage may varry. That seems important in this demographic.

ASU is excellent school for any business degree related. It is easy to get into and even has a honor college for those more brighter students.

my mom is a middle school teacher, i can leave it at that. I have no clue about financial aid, im more worried about what schools i will get into, also i will retake the sat.

By the way, does anyone know anything about Ft. Lewis College in Durango, CO? According to its website, it’s a public LAC that seems like a match/safety for 3.0 students with corresponding scores. The only problem I’m seeing with it, comes from the low 4 yr graduation rate, only 19%. Seeing as it appears that more than half the student live on campus, that’s a very low figure.

Curious how someone with a 3.3 got a full ride to WWU. My D attends, and despite a 3.6 and decent SATs, no merit aid at all. We’re in-state and do not qualify in any way, shape or form for need-based aid.

ebruin, OOS publics are probably going to be more than you and your mom can afford. The tuition, fees, and R&B, even with federal financial aid, is probably too high. At WWU, tuition & fees alone are $18K for OOS. Add books and housing to that - and I can’t say it would be worth more than a CA school.

Gonzaga is a great school, but no guarantees that you would get enough aid to make it affordable. It is also getting increasingly selective.

Seattle University might be a possibility - they do pretty well with financial aid.

Ft Lewis is a fun school with lots of distractions (nearby skiing and hiking for starters).
It attracts many alternative and non-traditional students–including students from educationally disadvantaged backgrounds who tend to have a higher than normal drop out rates. Many students at Ft Lewis have goals in life do not necessarily include completing a college education.

Son of a friend attended and did eventually graduate from Ft Lewis. However, he was returning to school after 4 years in the Peace Corp and was recurrently ill with malaria during his college career. He also needed to take time off to work in order to attend school. The time off to work pattern at Ft Lewis is especially common with many of the students working seasonally full time in the local ski and tourism industries.

SO my daughter has a GPA around 3.3 or 3.4. But her SAT scores are low (400 each on Math / Reading). Her ACT composite is 18. She has been diagnosed with some auditory processing issues, as well as as memory and processing speed issues. She makes up for these issues by working hard (so her GPA is decent, but a lot of work has gone into it).

Given these circumstances, we are not sure exactly where she can get in. She is just entering her senior year (so we have to apply soon). Of course we have been thinking about it for a while, but I thought I would ask the experts on this forum for their recommendations.

We are local to San Jose State. Her CSU eligibility index works out to about 3400. And I found on the SJSU website where they show the required number to get in for each major. Going by this gauge, she “should” get into SJSU. Is this a reliable metric, can we consider SJSU a “safe” school for her ?

She is outgoing and can mix anywhere. But we think she is likely to have a hard time initially with college classes, and so we are considering limiting our search to CSU schools which are not too far away - that means CSU Monterey Bay, SF State, Sonoma State, maybe Fresno State or Stanislaus State. Given her GPA/scores, what are her chances ?

She has always wanted to do something related to health sciences. Is this a major she can get into at a CSU ? How hard are the classes in this field, and how are the career prospects ?

I realize these are broad and maybe difficult questions, so if I am posting on the wrong forum please feel free to redirect me.

I don’t have an absolute answer for you, but kids in the referral area, applying on time, and meeting the idex should have the best shot. With regard to majors, check out the matrix on this CSU mentor link.

There is also a California colleges forum, and each CSU has a forum, but many don’t get much activity.

Okay, maybe not each. Here is one for Sonoma State
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sonoma-state-university/</a></p>

@vasu100: Which schools give the best support/accommodation to LD kids? I would assume it differs from campus to campus. Also, have you considered Whittier College? Their best merit scholarships have an Oct. 15 (or thereabouts) deadline. When we visited, it seemed to have a great environment, and DD’s friend who just finished her freshman year, is very happy there.

WWU has an average GPA of 3.5, which is still lower than PLU’s 3.6 average. If you’re looking for help with scholarships and aid, try going onto College *******. Sign up and add in your GPA, scores, and everything else, and they’ll match you with a ton of scholarships.

I am updating to add a couple of WA privates. I think including this range of schools is good, some are at the top of the range, some lower, but people coming here should be exploring and can eliminate the options themselves:

I don’t think WwU offers many scholarships. I’ve known kids who are NMS attending and they have gotten only about $1k.

I also wouldn’t call someone wealthy just because they drive a Mercedes, I know about as many people who drive Mercedes or BMW as Volvos with approx same incme level.
