Western Schools for the 3.0-3.3 kid

No, not very many. I am going on to graduate school, but not at Evergreen. They have graduate programs (Master’s only) in education, teaching, public administration (policy, non-profit, or tribal governance), and environmental science.

Here it is again with recent additions. Again see page 6 for the hyperlinks for most of the schools. For later additions the link will be on the page wherein the school was originally added and will be found on pages 7-11

Tulare, (my first post - yay)! My daughter has set her sights on University of Oregon, but will be applying in Fall 2011 for admission in 2012 - I think I have those dates right. Will the automatic admission be 3.5 at that time? I’ve been crawling all over the internet and can’t find anything except the recent change to 3.4. Please let me know! Thanks!

loopyloo best of luck to your D. I don’t know much about your question but I always suggest a call to the admissions office for those sorts of queries. Congrats on your first post BTW!

For the right type of adventurous, outdoorsy kid, you can’t beat the University of Alaska in Fairbanks.

Thanks so much, historymom! Your suggestion makes perfect sense (which is probably why I didn’t think of it)! Will be calling UO next week.
I want y’all to know how much I appreciate this thread - it’s like a warm bath. My D straddles 3.3-3.4 and is an exceptionally bad test taker (anxiety issues - yes, she’s been worked with, but to no avail). I predict the ACT/SAT’s to be disasters. PLAN to ACT this year (sophomore year) was 21. This is one of the reasons UO looks very attractive.

Hi loopyloo. Welcome to the forum. It will keep you sane! Regarding UO and auto admission, I heard a few months ago that they were going to raise the GPA needed for auto admit to a 3.5 starting with the class entering in 2011. However, I know they’ve struggled with the policy overall because some students and even high school advisers mistakenly think it is the MINIMUM needed to get in, and that scares students with lower GPAs away. So I wouldn’t be surprised if they do away with the policy in the next year or two. Regardless, it demonstrates that if you have anywhere close to a 3.4 you are quite likely to get in. So it sounds like your daughter might be just fine, even with lower ACT scores. The admissions office at UO is very friendly and available, so definitely either call or do a live online chat with them from their admissions website. [Freshmen | Office of Admissions](http://admissions.uoregon.edu/freshmen/freshmen)

loopyloo, UO will look at a student’s weighted or unweighted average. They’re perfectly happy to take the higher number, as long as it’s printed on the transcript. They won’t, however, calculate it. So if that 3.3-3.4 is unweighted, your D might be in good shape.

Tulare and SlitheyTove, thanks so much for your words of encouragement - y’all are like Christmas in June! UO offers a major in Medieval studies - that was all my D needed to know so now she’s off-like-a-rocket excited to go there. No where else. Period. Full stop. It seems like a good fit for her too - she’s more of a easy going natural/earth girl than SoCal (where we live) competitive so there we go. Thanks again for all your input - you all are awesome (or as my D would say: full of win+!111!!).

Thank you so much for this thread. I have been reading all the posts for students in the 3.0 GPA range and I am really glad to see a focus for western schools. I am in the Los Angeles area and many students are defaulting to the community colleges without applying elsewhere. I would like my son to at least think about leaving home for college, so I am happy to get some new ideas.

PS Not putting down community college, I teach nursing at Pasadena City College, if anyone needs any information, but the classes are full and hard to get.

This thread is great, isn’t it Fionia? I agree with you about community colleges - they are truly great places (I tutor math at one) for a kid to mature a bit and then go on to a top university! I know a bunch of kids who just finished their 60 units and are going on to UCLA.
