We've got research, yes we do, we've got research....

Since I seem to be on a VT cheerleading roll the last few days....

VT moved up to 41st place for research expenditures as determined by the NSF. Top 5% nationally as funds expended in the pursuit of science, engineering, and other scholarly activity exceed all other universities in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

I am posting this because I sometimes hear students say they fear going to a big state school may diminish their undergraduate research opportunities with leaders in their respective fields. Personally, my son (and several of our friends' kids) has found this not to be the case at Virginia Tech and has gained a great deal of knowledge from the opportunities in research he has been allowed to take part in under the watchful eye of some brilliant educators.

For those of you research nerds, make contact early with professors you connect with and are doing research in the field you are interested in. You may be surprised to see what kind of exciting studies you can be a part of as you move through your years at Tech.

If anything I’d say you have more exposure to research teams at VT than most other schools, regardless of size, due to the sheer amount of it going on. Like you said, get to know professors early and they’ll almost always either have something going on or know someone that does.
