ohh thanks lifeunfolding! :D.. yeah I get it now..

WELL I RECIEVE IT TOO...
they see your sats scores and choose you... not everbody is choosen.. i have some friends that went and they loved it..also is a plus for your application because is a lidership conferenc..but is really expensive.. but if you really like to go there are scholarships.. lol

Oh, I received one too. I'm from China btw. It's really expensive for me. Has anyone applied for scholarship? Is it easy to get? and besides the tuition, how much else should I pay? Thanks

OK GYLC, Im a senior in high school and i got one last year when i was a junior. I go to a class of like 20 students and to be honest almost all of my class mates got it, even the worst. I think its somewhat legit. tuition has me thinking its somewhat a scam but when i read about it, it sounds legit. Just lemme say this, if you wanna do it for a great experience, defiantely do it. you meet ppl froma ll around the world. if its because u think colleges in the US will be impressed, think again. to College counselors, from what I have heard, it means little because the nomination process seems rather crooked and hard to tell wether everyone gets it as in my school's case or just a select few. I still reccommend it cause its a great experience.

There are better ways to waste money.

Oh I've got a pile of those, first time i've seen it mentioned anywhere, I always just assumed it's a scam, and well makes me look more enviro-friendly when i fill up the recylcing bin downstairs =P

Apparently this conference also occurs in Vienna/Budapest/Prague....

Summer 2006, some buddies and I encountered some people from a youth leader conference in Vienna...didn't get the name, but I presume it's this one. Did anyone go/know anyone else who went?

its too expensive........like $6000.........
As Abhi said, there are wayy better ways to spend that money.

The two weeks in DC and NYC is quite a bit less, $2600.

Would that change anyone's mind? My D just got one and they list past students from her school that attended, I may try to contact some of those parents...

I am a member in 2005. the experience is great, but food was very bad.

but food was very bad.

THAT'S IT, THERE'S NO WAY I"M GOING!
But seriously, what did you do in GYLC?

well, tens of students have got the letter from my school (in Pakistan) so i guess it isint such a big thing after all...the people btw, are nominated thru the collegeboard or so i have heard..and this time, apparently they mailed everyone who appeared for the SAT...btw i do think it would be a good experience

Anyway, there are financial assistance available too...u can check that on the website...(btw i m not applying since i would have to mail it by urgent or by a courier service, and thats like a 1000 rupees down the drain)

you can fax the finaid form... and apply for the program online

nop.. u can't fax it!..
u have to send it by mail-- that's the only way

I was also nominated once. Parents didn't allow me to go - said it was too sketchy. But I think it's a well established program, and intls use it to boost their apps. If you have the money go for it; if you don't, nothing lost. I don't know how their finaid works, though.

I know several students from my daughter's school who participated last year and the consensus was that is is a good program and a great opportunity for young people to be in an international setting with very motivated kids who are interested in global issues or leadership. Our high school actually has kids who have gone back 2 and 3 years in an row to participate in the program. I am speaking about the DC version of the GYLC. My daughter (sophomore) is considering going but isn't really interested in international issues or government. One of her friends who went last year was supposed to meet with Hillary Clinton but ended up meeting with one of her aides. Either way, I think it is real stuff.

I was nominated too and the letter which they sent to my parents was explaining that I've been nominated through CollegeBoard. It sounds like real fun but it's too much money. There are surely better ways to spend $4,000

i'm from china. it must be the college board who let out our privacies....

Hey, I'l give you guys the complete scoop on GYLC...

Call it a scam, fraud or whateverr..its basically a rich boys program that allows him/her to have something impressive on their transcript.

The program was very closely affiliated with my school for about one year. The senior class above me had about 10 people go for the DC program. This year several people recieved the 'invitation'. Now, the program has been dropped by our school as they have gone on a desperate attempt to roll in students. Trust me, the program sounds amazing when you read it etc..

I spent a considerable amount for another program that was much more valuable and prestigous - Harvard Model Congress. Go for something like this, its much more valuable and you learn a lot from it. GYLC is ten days of sitting in conferences and listening to paid speakers and amazing party nights. Unless you have 4000 greens to burn, dont go for it.

There's little to learn from it and its a waste of time. We tried it and chucked it.

You know... this program sort of reminds me of RYLA with all the leadership and things like that. The difference is this cost 4,000 bucks, the other is free through Interact Club (Rotary). While I never took this program, I think 4,000 can be better spent in other stuff. Though, I can imagine the lessons that could be learned that (which I won't be surprise if it the same as RYLA), would still be very good.
